I'm not really into Mariah.....I just dont get her appeal really. yes she can sing brilliantly (not so much lately), but the actual songs I feel are pretty week and wont last beyond her interpretation of them. I would never put madonna or mariah on the same level of songwriting such as prince, McCartney, Bowie, Wonder etc etc, however they are both extremely involved in the creative process, and i would imagine their influence on proceedings is very similar. They are the one constant in their music through the years so their consistency in making hit songs and albums has to be down to them, not the other producers. I would go on to argue that i think Madonna has evolved far better than mariah. The point about knowing exactly what youre getting from a mariah album is totally true, she has a formula she sticks to, i cant remember a madonna album ever sounding the same as the previous.

This issue as to what constitutes talent is all debateable. how is a god given talent for singing, any more worthy than a god given talent for dancing or artistic vision. Talent is excelling in your field. Your ability, your capacity to perform in a certain area. Mariah's talent is singing - THAT DOES NOT MAKE HER A MUSICIAN - Madonna's talent is more rounded in my opinion. Whilst she cannot sing like mariah, i find her voice really emotive, and whilst her range not be the most amazing, her pitch is excellent, she hits every note dead on.

Above everything, i see madonna as a performance artist. To my mind she is much more than just a singer, or a songwriter. She draws together so many different elements of culture, art and music, and delivers it all in the one little package we call madonna. Her videos, her live performances, her images, her songs, her opinions. One could say she doesnt excell in any of these areas specifically, however she does all of them better than anyone i can remember.

This thread was about talent, and i cant remember anyone who has the ability to do what madonna has done. yes people have made better songs, got better voices, made better art, are more intellegent, have produced great live concerts - hell written better childrens / sex books, but i know of few , if any who have done it all to the level she has.

More than that, she's done it all on her own terms. She may have been helped by many along the way, but i think its safe to say, she has always steered the ship. mariah on the other hand had most of her success under the guidance of Tommy Mottola, who - by her own admission - would let her have very little control over her career. She may be in control now, but that was not the case for a large part of her career.

So Mariah walks up there,with her large entourage,and starts throwing a fit.She demanded that Donna be "evicted" from the room...lol...Donna was pissed but she got her things and left anyway.But later in the show,Donna declined to perform onstage with Mariah! She was supposed to do a Supremes medley with Diana and Mariah,but she absolutely refused to perform with Mariah....lol...the two ladies spent the rest of the show ignoring each other.
