But that's Paris Hilton.... does she even count?

razz It ain't just Paris. Some stars have a reputation for being good with fans, others don't. Mariah is one of the ones who is known for really appreciating her fans.

I give kudos to Mariah for that, and even MJ though i know he's lost his marbles.

But that makes the Cameron Diaz story more believable. Mariah desperatly loves her fans, but any negative comment she decides to go kick some ass...
Honestly, it's been said that she's lost her marbles and with this i totally believe it.

Madonna has some screws loose too, but it took her 20 years before she went mega-kaballah freak.

nod I do believe Mariah is no longer "all there".

But this sort of BS always transpires when a star gets HUGE and loses sight of who they were in the first place.

I give her props for her website, because she leaves regular audio messages to fans even during the long stretches when she isn't promoting anything. This is one of the reasons why she has such a loyal fanbase. Sometimes they read like a stream-of-consciousness diary eek (if you remember, she even posted the "suicide" message there in July, 2001).

"So basically, all I really wanna say is I don't know what's going on with life, and I hope all the fans are good, and I just want you to know that I'm trying to understand things in life right now, and so I really don't feel that I should be doing music right now. Glitter is going to be out soon. And you're going to have that, and I'm gonna be taking some time off. What I'd like to do is take a little break, or at least get one night of sleep."

Fans were pretty worried - and when Virgin got wind of it they pulled it off the site.

Nope - it's real. The day after she posted it, I believe, she slashed her wrists (remember the "I got hit by a flying dinner plate" excuse?)

It doesn't seem like a suicide note, it seems more like she's been working hard and wants to rest.

How does one take it as a suicide threat?

They didn't - until the day afterwards. And then it got its nickname wink

You can still find mp3's of it floating around online.

Nope, I don't.

But here's a full transcript

MariahCarey.com Updates But It's Not Good News
Majority of you have probably already heard the two messages from yesterday. Mariah left the first message at around 3 pm and less than 20 minutes later it was removed and a second message was posted. Now, both messages are gone today and Mariah has sent her fans into a panic over what is going on.

Many of you contacted me and wanted to know what was happening and told me to get in contact with Mariah to see what is going on. However, I don't have any contact with Mariah whatsoever and I am sure her friends and family are nurturing her through this time. I don't know why she got so upset and wanted to inform us about it but I am sure she is probably fine now. She needs to rest and take care of her health and to stop worrying about other people all the time. She knows we love her and support her 100% and I am sure she will be okay!

As for the MTV Birthday Bash, I still think she will perform at it, so don't worry. She is MTV's Headlining act!! Here is the transcripts of the two messages and the voice messages in zip form. Many thanks to Will, from MCWNO, for the audios and transcipts.

Message#1:
So basically all I really want to say is I don't know what's going on with life. And I hope all the fans are good and I just want you to know that I'm trying to understand things in life right now and so I really don't feel that I should be doing music right now. And I just want everyone to understand that - and that's really true. So, if I don't make music it's not because I don't want to for you fans. And, if I [sigh] I have two phones in my ear. I'm not saying I'm defeated because I'm not defeated. I'm just gonna do this for me, and I know that the people who care about me will care about me. But I just can't trust anybody anymore right now because I don't understand what's going on.
So, because I'm not watching t.v., I'm just desperately trying to get out of this room. And I don't know if that makes any sense to anybody, but the truth is I am calling to say that I love you - to my fans. I hope this message gets to you. I'm not gonna be - are you going to - Glitter is going to be out soon. And you're gonna have that, and then I'm gonna be taking some time off.

I can't reach Nancy Berry so I'd like to say that Nancy, I will record and stuff it's just that I needed some time off but nobody was really giving it to me. And I feel that that's only because of [clears throat] the situation that we've been dealing with for awhile. And that my managers were a little upset about it and they were trying to press on and get through it, but that didn't work. And so it's nobody's fault really it's just that I got - I worked it into a bad place and I'm not trying to have any bad comments around anybody by telling peoples names.

And well, what I'd like to do is just take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video or a thing - where all I really want to do is just be me. And that's what I should have done in the first place but somebody - I mean people - whatever. I allowed myself to be a little bit too paranoid about life. And life is for living so that's how deep this is.

So if anybody gets this that really cares, just do me a favor, close the record - close the management company down that I own, and I'm gonna lie here and wait for that to happen - not that anybody cares. It probably sounds ridiculous. But, I can't reach anybody on the phone so actually, that's where we're at.

So fans I love ya, we're gonna do it again. And were gonna do it, we're gonna make, and if I take a little time off that's cool. And that's all I'm saying lambs, you know how I love you. And everything's great, all right? Bye.

["Crybaby" ending plays] Hello? Hello? Randolph? Oh, Randolph? [Sigh]. Try it again. Okay. Hey everybody it's Mariah. I'm just trying to let you know that I'm leaving this message because everything's okay. And what we're gonna do is, I'm gonna take like a minute off. And then what's gonna happen is you're gonna see the movie and things of that nature. So don't think anything's crazy if there's anything bizarre going on with the internet or any of that stuff. Honestly, I'm not paying any attention to any of that. I'm ready to take off my pager. And you know how I am.

So what I want to do is to let you know that everything's cool. And that - hello? Randolph? And that I'm gonna make music for you but right now I need a break so I will, as a human being, take that break. And then I'm going to come back and sing for a minute, after I get my management company put together and after I take care of some other issues. So - okay?

So thank you, nothing's wrong, you don't have to do anything to anybody. I just need a break. And I know I don't say this that much but guess what? It's time to take care of myself. And I feel that it's a little disgusting that people can't understand that a celebrity is not more important than - and this is not gonna make much sense but, than my friend's little girl and her safety. That's all I cared about basically. And some other personal issues. And honestly this is not for anything other than the fact that I care about my fans. And I'm telling you this, and I would like to walk out of a hotel with some dignity.

So, that being said, you guys know how random my messages are anyway - I love ya, and we're gonna do it again, okay? And there's nothing to be upset about. We still win, if you win spiritually you win anyway. Okay, I hope this message gets to them. No I pray actually. Actually let me see something. Just hold on. [Phone cuts off].

I remember Mariah Daily had them available for download: http://www.mariahdaily.com/july01.html, but not anymore.

Note: Nancy Berry was an executive at Virgin at the time.

i'm glad mariah seems to be doing better. really, i am. i'm not gonna play, though, like i wasn't getting a laugh when i heard about her crazy antics. especially the one rumor that claimed she had gone to a meeting (at virgin?) and started blowing bubbles and giggling in the middle of it. koo-koo!

but i'm glad to see she has her wits about her again.

Michael is a vocalist. his lack of competance with physical instruments doesn't prevent his ability to create music with his vocal instrument. Unless you don't consider vocalist to be musicians? If not, then he isn't one and certainly not on the level of the above mentioned.

Personally, I like to distinguish a vocalist from an instrumentalist. "Musician" can be rather nebulous at times.

Okay, my two cents.

Some have said "Madonna is pop", but that undercuts her talents. She has clearly branched as an artist, and if one listens to her first few albums, they sound nothing like the last few. Her middle period "Human Nature", "Bedtime Stories" sounds like neither the early or late.
With the exception of "American Life", Madonna puts out some of the best, most interesting "pop" around.
IMO, Mariah is boring. Most of the albums follow the same formula. Her growth potential as an artist is very low, as it is impossible to imagine a Mariah album without the same mix of ballads, mid-tempos and occasional hip-hop flavor. With Madonna, I honestly have no idea what her next album will sound like. That makes her, if nothing else, an interesting artist.
Mariah can outsing Madonna, yes, but if the songs are boring and sound like any other of a number of R&B acts (are her schmaltzy ballads really that different from other singers schmaltzy ballads?), who cares?

michael was doing just fine before pyro.

Yeah he was, but I still don't consider him a musician. Great entertainer, but musician I'm sorry can't agree with it. I agree with Carlos Santana's statement about MJ being a great entertainer like Sammy Davis Jr. but they were not musicians.

In '85 (Before Bad), Mike was every bit in their league....I think people on this site need to recognize that you can make a true musical impact just as Jimi Hendrix, Prince, the Beatles and so on without picking up an instrument, if you are blessed with great chops and superior musical instincts....Mike had both...so did Frank Sinatra, so did Billie Holiday, same as Sammy, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye (Yes I know he wrote a lot of his songs and played piano, but you get the point)...ect....What makes a person that picks up an instrument anymore greater than say Sarah Vaughn? Musician snobbery is cool when you are dealing with no talent hacks like Britney Spears. But not with giants of the stage....MJ just happened to become totally obsessed with being the no. 1 pop star on the planet, which destroyed his career and made him into the producer chasing, I gotta get a hit nut we know today...But for much of the late '70s and early '80s MIke was standing shoulder to shoulder with all of the giants...Back in the day, vocalists were praised as musicians...The thing is, you have to know which vocalists fit this category...And that's the problem...They are a dying breed.....

Quincy Jones produced "Bad", too. Mike didn't become a producer-chaser until "Dangerous".

Yeah...But Mike's imprints are all over that Bad album...he did a lot more writing on that album and it showed....Except for about 3 or four tracks, Bad was just average pop for Mike....Liberian Girl is probably the best song on that album...the rest I can deal without....

well, obviously Mariah is a better singer than Madonna. There is no doubt about that.Celine Dion and Whitney Houston are also better singers than Madonna. But for many reasons,I find Madonna to be much more interesting than all of them. She's bolder, takes more chances and she actually evolves with each album.I like Mariah's latest CD,but honestly,it's basically the same formula she's been using since the mid-90s.The only difference is,she's got some great melodies and hooks this time around. But would she ever make a bold, challenging album like 'Ray Of Light'? To me,being a great artist is more than just having a great voice. It's also the ability to evolve,re-invent yourself and try new things.Madonna is a master at that.

You nailed my response David.

Also, Im suprised Scorpion sided with Madonna.
Im also suprised this topic exists.

I'm surprised too. lol

As you know,I don't even like Madonna & I love Mariah...

I just think it's fucked up that ppl like Whitney, Mariah, etc are considered far more talented than ppl who may not have the "superb" vocals but are more talented in other sections. What better place to get opinions on this than the Org? cool I'm surprised this thread garnerd more than 200 responses!Wowzers. Carry on. wink

Madonna is a POP artist therefore she changes her sound as the pop landscape changes, Mariah is mostly a soul/r&b artis so she focuses on that style.

I think the problem with today's R&B music is,there is a lack of innovation.Everyone is doing the same thing, working with the same producers, etc.I'd love to see Mariah get away from R&B for awhile...maybe do a loud,rock/electronica album. It'll never happen, but it would be exciting.

Yes! I want to see Mariah do House & Electro-Funk. I bet that she can get some dancefloor classics this way. cool

Here's an article for you

During his Australian Tour , last february , Stuart Price aka Jacques Lu Cont talked with The Herald Sun , about his current works with Madonna. Here is part of the interview featured in The Melbourne Hit section.

HE has Madonna on his speed dial and a day job in her band, and New Order liked his take on their trademark sound so much they hired him to work on their new album. Yes, life is good when you are Jacques Lu Cont. .....

Price was recruited by Madonna to play guitar and all-important keyboards on her Drowned World and Reinvention world tours. Madonna reinvented some of her biggest hits for the latter, and Price wore a huge grin for most of it.

``It's hard not to have a ball when you're standing on stage in a kilt hitting a drum next to Madonna,'' he says. ``That tour was an amazing opportunity to play that kind of music to that many people. Even if you're responsible for making only 20 per cent of it have a lot of dance music integrity, you're doing something right.''

This year Price is no longer just the hired help on tour: he's started writing songs with Madonna for her new album. He's coy when asked about the direction in which Madonna will head after the lukewarm reaction to her American Life record.

``We don't actually talk about other people she's working with,'' he says, but hints she may be embracing the '80s dance pop he makes.

``Stylistically I'm certainly not doing anything I wouldn't normally do.''

He's quick to praise his boss and her often-ignored musical prowess. ``She's brilliant to work with. She often doesn't get credit for the fact she's an amazing producer. She'll carry her vision right through from beginning to end without ever dithering or losing sight of what's going on.
``The one thing you'll never hear Madonna say is, `Hmm, I don't really know what to do'. She always knows where she wants to take things and she'll push you until she gets it. She's an amazing musician

I think Madonna has a vision and knows how to make it happen. But there's a huge difference between that and being a "producer" and a "musician". Neither Mariah nor Madonna qualifies, imo, because those are not skills they've mastered in any way.
[Edited 5/31/05 5:44am]

If Madonna is spending her hard earn cash to make things happen, THAT does make her a producer (EXAMPLES: her studio, her high electric bills, the instruments for the people helping her like Jacques, etc.). cool

I read the article. Lu Cont says that Madonna has a vision and doesn't let up until she gets what she wants. He confuses this with being a "producer" and a "musician", which is not unsurprising considering he's from the DJ/mixing school of producing. If she were to produce an entire record on her own, and write an entire batch of songs on her own, I might think of her differently. Madonna is extraordinarily skilled at finding the ideal collaborators to make her vision a reality, but she is not a producer or musician when taken alone.
[Edited 5/31/05 6:02am]

I've researched Madonna for years, and know what she's capable of. Of course, people will put image over musical talent and many jerk offs don't realize that Madonna has the ability to compose and produce. Of course she may not be the greatest at it, and she may like a hit so she'd get more professionals to help her out with it. But people like Pat Leonard, William Orbit and Shep Pettibone have all stated of what Madonna is capable of and vastly underrated.

BTW, did you know that Madonna can play the live drums & program her own drum machine beats (all of this since to earty 80's)?

My favorite Mariah lyrics ever have to be for "The Wind" and "Breakdown".

Of course, she has her bad days, too:

(Ah) My girl
Got a new boyfriend
Yeah
Yeah (Oh)
K-I-S-S-I-N-G

(Ah) Uh huh uh huh baby
(Ah) Uh huh uh huh baby
(Ah) Uh huh uh huh baby
(Whooooo)
I wanna
I wanna
I wanna
I wanna
I need a
I need a
I need a
I need a
A lover
A lover
A lover
A lover
A lover
A lover
A lover
A loverboy for me

Mariah:
I got myself a lover
Who loves what I like
When he invites me over
I come every time
Oh my sugar daddy
Takes me for a ride
Whatever way we're going
I expect to leave on time

He's all mine
And his loving makes me high
Like a taste of ecstasy
All I need is him to be my loverboy

Loverboy
Come on and love me
Give me more
Touch me and touch me
I enjoy the way you rock me all night long
(Baby all night long)
Loverboy come on and take me
Only you know how to make me
Shudder with anticipation
All night long
(All night long)

I got myself a lover
And he's so sublime
He's quite a bit of heaven
When he comes inside
So come on sugar daddy
Take me for a ride
Whatever way we're going next
I expect to leave on time

I get weak
And his candy's just so sweet
When he caressed my whole body
All I need is him to be my loverboy

Loverboy
Come on and love me
Give me more
Touch me and touch me
I enjoy the way you rock me all night long
(I enjoy the way you rock me)
Loverboy come on and take me
Only you know how to make me
Shudder with anticipation
All night long

Cameo:
This stuff is starting now
This stuff is starting now
It's the same feeling
I always seem to get around you (Yes I do)
Cause you affect me
Fascinate me
I thank heaven for the things that you do
This stuff is starting now
This stuff is starting now
This stuff is starting now (Whoo)

My thoughts flow in my head
I toss and turn in my bed
In the morning when I think about you (Candy)
Simply put, you're the reason why
Even though I'm real shy
It's like candy
I attempt to look my best for you (Indeed I do)

Mariah:
Loverboy
Loverboy
Come on and love me
Give me more
Touch me and touch me
I enjoy the way you rock me all night long
(I enjoy the way you rock me)
Loverboy come on and take me
Only you know how to make me
Shudder with anticipation
All night long (Strawberry)
Loverboy come on and take me (Raspberry)
Only you know how to make me (All those good things)
Shudder with anticipation (Diamonds and gumdrops)
All night long (That's what you seem to me)
Oh loverboy
Loverboy
Come on and love me
Give me more
Touch me and touch me
I enjoy the way you rock me all night long
Loverboy come on and take me
Only you know how to make me
Shudder with anticipation
All night long

OK, you prove you point. Mariah was on some bad drugs when she wrote THIS!!!

Fans were pretty worried - and when Virgin got wind of it they pulled it off the site.

this when she had her breakdown? i remember i watched trl that day and she was making carson very nervous. she had ice cream bars and shit... and took off her top and he was like ' omfg whoa baby....'

Mariah has use THE 5 octave voice (AKA The Sonic Bird Scream, The Highest High Note).

Only Minnie Riperton could hit a higher note!!! wink
