Coldplay encourages Fans to download his new album. EMI Responds to criticism Of the BBC:
EMI responds to criticism Fans encouraged to download 19 May 05 - Globalise Resistance, one of the leading anti-globalisation groups, is encouraging Coldplay fans to download the band's music free from unauthorised file-sharing websites. The comments came after Chris Martin attacked shareholders and profits at EMI, the company that releases his records. In a politically charged attack Martin said he didn't care that the corporation's profits might be dented by the delay in recording Coldplay's third album X&Y, due out on 7 June. EMI's now issued a statement suggesting it's relaxed about his opinions: "We don't expect or want our rock stars to be stockbrokers," it said. "Shareholders are the great evil of this modern world." Chris MartinSpeaking to the media in New York, Martin said: "I don't really care about EMI. I'm not really concerned about that. I think shareholders are the greatest evil of this modern world." Martin said the album X&Y was delayed because the group felt their first eight months of recording sessions had produced songs that lacked the "spark" of earlier hits Yellow, Clocks and The Scientist. "It's very strange for us that we spent 18 months in the studio just trying to make songs that make us feel a certain way and then suddenly become part of this corporate machine," he said. A spokesman for Globalise Resistance said: "He will have created more money for EMI than they will ever have created for him in return." He said Coldplay fans should respond by downloading the band's music for free from unauthorised file-sharing websites. [Edited 5/21/05 10:04am]

What a load of pseudo-communist bollocks.
The absolute majority of the bands that matter to you in your life owe their existance to "stockbrokers" and "shareholders". Without the money that they plough into the music industry - yes for very selfish reasons, but it goes into the business all the same - how the hell are you gonna pay for studio time, mastering costs, CD production, packaging, design ,licensing, promotion, touring.....etc etc Martin has made his money already, so he has the luxury of sticking his fingers up at the record company, but he'd be nothing without them. It is like a couple selling off their house for a nice profit and then saying to people "don't go to banks for mortgages - look at us, we are loaded" when it is the bank that enabled them to buy the house in the first place. No one likes banks, no one likes being in debt or commited to paying back a huge sum, but it is a necessary evil, just like record companies are. Martin is a hypocritical, hippie twat who can take his shite music and fuck right off.

This reeks of a publicity stunt to coincide with the release of their new album. It just grabs them more headlines. It's amazing how these performers do these kinds of things just when their next album is about to drop.

What "artists" cant seem to understand is that the the big stars subsidize the little ones. If a record company had to split every $ down the middle with the artist they will never take chances on new artists.
When artsts agree to pay back their advances when the album flops then we can start talking about how much money EMI "owes" Coldplay. I'm sure they are doing alright. Most record companies LOSE money. Its the one or two hits, that makes it worthwhile.
