Either of the following is true of anyone who goes on that show.

1) They're selling out before they are even famous, or
2) They actually like that caliope cheese circus

Contestants on that show are brands, not musicians. It's a damn shame.

i think the show is fine for what it is - it has less to do with artistry and more to do with competition. it's sports for people who don't like sports.

the talented people who compete on the show have what look to be good musical theater chops - they're not pop idols or rock stars, but it's not sexy to have a show where people compete to get the lead in a broadway revival of "kiss me kate". plus, anyone who's not stupid should know that true pop idols wouldn't want to be thought of as having headshots or appearing on Fox singing Air Supply songs for Paula Abdul. lol

it's foolishness. it's thunderdome karaoke. i don't watch it, but i'm not bothered by it. i hope the kids who go on there get noticed and end up doing bounty paper towel commercials. there's good money in that.

that's very true. I heard them both and they just aren't talented to me....but that won't stop either of them or anyone else for that matter, from selling millions of records. We go for what's popular and not for what's good in this country.

how so? all acts get the same coaching and branding by the labels.....and the two top acts from AI (kelly clarkson and gay clay) bought their contracts out and are both doing what they want...and are successful.

not that i enjoy either artist but im not gonna begrudge anyone's personal choices in styles or taste....

I can agree with that. nod

I guess it gets under my skin because it's one of many symptoms of a sickly industry. There is no room for any real personality or character on that show. It's all so cookie-cutter.

They have different themed nights and it is apparent that many of the contestants aren't feelin' it or are only pretending to in order to win. That's selling out.

I'm sorry- the whole thing just reeks of soulless, heartless pap to me. shrug

The only American Idol with any form of artistic success will be Kelly Clarkson, I think. Clay Aiken still has not broken out of the mould set by the show.

i hear what your saying but this is nothing new....Showtime At The Apollo, Star Search and others have always been around. I've read that there were shows like this on tv during the 50's and 60's too...

its Pop...some of these kids will dissapear off the face of the earth and others will mature to become outstanding artist...lets not forget Tina Turner was discovered at an open mike night....tis the same concept.

and your always going to have your Sineads who refuse to follow the mainstream.....Fionna Apple anyone?

same as it ever was...

speaking of Sinead, hey Anxiety did you read what Sinead had to say about your ole broad Courtney Love..I think im gonna start a thread about it. It was a very truthful statement.

Ok, I can't believe you actually went there. There's a huge difference between open mike night and Compete For Stifling Record Contract In Front Of Millions Of Americans Season __. Non-conformist talent and artistry has no chance of surviving in the latter. Tina Turner would have been kicked off the AI stage long ago.

yes i am..a talent show is a talent show....like anxiety said, its oversized karaoke..

and sure, Tina Turner might have been kicked off AI..but wait, Fantasia took the whole thing last year..And many consider her the most talented person to come out of the show..

oh, and Lady Ella was boo'd off of Showtime At The Appollo...for the record.

so, it all still looks like the same shit to me.

All great artists have been booed at one time or another. That has no impact on the argument. Most of these acts are unfit for dinner theater, let alone Showtime At The Apollo.

In fairness, I think even the good ones would likely get booed at Apollo. Not because they aren't good, but because by and large the Apollo audience isn't looking for a pop act.

thats elitist snobery at its worse....and dont tell me someone like bowie or prince wouldnt show up on idol cause we just dont know....madonna would have worked american idol out!!

No, sos. If a David Bowie or a Prince got discovered on this show, I would be all for it. However, a David Bowie or a Prince would never sign up for AI in the first place, because the contract is the definition of soul-sucking enslavement. Talk about embarrassing to be that talented and say you were on American Idol. Their music would never be taken seriously. And they would never have a chance in hell of winning, either. You know that as well as I do. This show exists to sell a lot of bland, shitty records and create momentary pop stars because it's a lot less legwork for the industry.

Perfectly put. And I will deny anyone who has been on that show- "talented" or not. Call me a snob, but it just screams of the ultimate sell-out. shrug

i disagree...i have a hunch theres a reason why bo performed sub-par last night...i have a hunch theres a reason why constantine started doing crappy songs...i have a hunch theres a reason why that cute lil brown boy who wore the hats dropped out...

exposure sans the contract. if thats how they choose to work the system then more power to them..and like i've already pointed out, Kelly Clarkson and Gay Asskiss have already got out of their contracts.....

and hey, Prince swears up and down his contract was horrible too...so, either way you find yourself getting screwed, right?

'american idol' is not meant to be a launchpad for future princes or bowies. the formula of the show has nothing to do with artistry and it is not meant to champion visionary musicianship. it's simply a game show where schmoes who can sing loud win lots of stuff so people at home can say "i can do that!" and go out and buy lots of american idol products so they can feel more connected to the idea of one day auditioning for the show and becoming a famous yodeling schmoe, even though the chances of them actually doing it are enormously slim.

Leave it to a writer to tell it exactly how it is. This comment should end all discussion.
