Songs sampled by Janet

Has anyone got a complete list? Some of them are very imaginitve, others overused and not so much.

BTW, what's the main song sampled in Free Xone? I looked in the credits and downloaded 'Think (About It' (Lyn Collins) and 'Tighten Up' (Archie Bell & The Drells) but neither is the sample I'm looking for.

Ooh, good thread!

I know people will say that Janet's songs sample too much, but I LOVE how her songs take a SAMPLE and can make something all its own. The breakdown to "If" is still mind-blowing, and I love how they took the little chimes from "Love Child" and made a whole new song.

Now I have to make a playlist of all the originals!

I think the wide array of samples say more about Jam & Lewis than they do about Janet. Those two guys know practically every 70's record ever released. I remember Janet mentioning in an interview how she never even heard of Change featuring Luther Vandross' "The Glow Of Love" and that it was Jam who suggested using the sample on "All For You".

Mind you, this doesn't make Jam & Lewis creative geniuses since anyone can borrow a riff or interpolate another artist's song, however, it certainly does provide us with some reasons as to why they've had so much success working with such a diverse array of artists. They listen to different genres and draw on those influences.

A few questions/observations:

1. Why didn't the liner notes in Rhythm Nation 1814 originally credit the samples?

2. According to Design Of A Decade 1986/1996, "Alright" doesn't sample any song at all!

3. Where can we find the mp3's for Roxanne Shante & Biz Markie's "Def Fresh Crew" and Lyn Collins' "Think About It".

4. Janet has avoided alot of flack for using samples unlike a certain Ms. Carey.

I have the mp3's to Herbie Hancock's "Hang Up Your Hang Ups", Evelyn "Champagne" King's "I'm In Love" and America's 'Ventura Highway".

Mariah hasn't gotten much flack for using samples. The samples she uses on her remixes are quite inventive sometimes (ex. "I Still Believe/Pure Imagination (Damizza Remix)"). What she DOES get flack for is for using similar samples over and over and over again (how many times has her shit sounded like "Genius of Love"? lol)

No one speaks up on this, but I guess I'll have to...

In the liner notes of "If" it only lists The Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" as a sample. But if you know your hip hop, in the track it also samples "Bang Zoom (Let's Go Go)" by the Real Roxanne. Those go-go drums are undeniable.

Rhythm Nation was released before it became standard practice to give songwriting credit for samples.
