Chaka Khan - "Roll me through the Rushes"

"Roll me through the rushes like Moses..."

Im aware this song is poetic, but is it a metamorph for love-making or spiritually finding herself or something else?

Harlepolis

Thats my FAVE slow jam of that album.

How she wails through the bridge and after it makes me spine shivers.

Maybe I'm being a lil' bit biased but CK moves me more than Aretha,,,,I don't know, something about her naked voice got more truth than the lyrics she sings.

I love Chaka but I don't know this song. Just got the lyrics.
It's hard to say. If it's not spiritual then it's got the serious double-entendres. Did Chaka/the writers ever explain?

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Guide me to the new woman who waits
Current, leave me on the banks
By the cottage
Wher we will dine with silver cups
And golden plates

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses

I've prepared for my last journey
You know I've worked all my life
To make this basket strong
But a woman alone on a river
She can't stay in the water too long

I've been chilled, I've lost my will
And I've stayed away from rivers
Much too long
I really must stay in this dirty dirty city
Till I found out that my strength was gone

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses
Just like Moses

Make my journey, make it short in space
Let me lose this hardness that I got now, Lord
Water, wash away all traces of hate
I will do what you say
If you just show me how, river

Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes just like Moses
Roll me through the rushes like Moses
Roll me through the rushes
Just like Moses on the Nile

River, river (sail)
River, river (sail)
River, river (sail)
River, river (sail)

-----
It seems mostly spiritual Mainly 'cause you wouldn't think someone would use Moses as a sexual Metaphor but there are a couple of places that kinda feel the writers are messing with you.

Looks like a song about getting out of the ghetto nod Praying for a way out of the hard times.

Seems as if she want's to be changed as Moses was changed at that bush.
Changed/made stronger maybe.

But I don't recall Moses being rolled thru any bush though.

The scratches!

Harlepolis, maybe we're both a lil' bit biased! I love Chaka and given the choice, would listen to her before Aretha. And this is one of my faves as well (along with Through the Fire). Do we have to do penance for that? confused

I agree... and she's asking for God's guidance and protection during her search for a better life, by making a reference to that Bible story* of God watching over baby Moses's basket rolling through the bulrushes along the Nile River, to protect him from harm...
