The disrespect 4 Bass Yesterday on my way home from college I popped my Greastet cd from Duran Duran and
I noted that their bass player is incredible (One of the Taylor boys ). I also realized that the bass is generally put in a secondary position in terms of music mixing...It's a crime! Few r the artist that respect the bass. Bowie is maybe the most notable bass user I know. All is albums give the bass the same importance as a guitar (Scary monster is an example...)

Actually, I just recently noticed that Wham! had a great bassist (studio musician?) Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon (Graceland!!!) had outstanding bass in their music, also. "Whatever skin we're in

I was gonna say that. New Order/Joy Division rock a bass like nobody's business. It's even more important than guitar in the mix.

Yeah, kinda. They stumbled on that on accident. When they were first playing together, they had really shitty equipment. Bernard's amp wouldn't work unless he had it cranked to 10, so he developed his playing around extreme distortion with wild blocks and spirals of sound. And Peter couldn't hear himself over Barney's volume so he had to play high and clear. Bass took over as the main melodic instrument for them. So they inadvertedly created a new sound in the process. I love it. With Joy Division, it makes the songs totally disorienting and haunted sounding. With New Order, it adds a lot of melancholy to their otherwise danceable style.

I loved them Me too. My favorite band of the 90's I'd say. Although it seems like he generates a lot of interest without the band. Zwan did quite well and people are buzzing about his solo stuff. Hopefully they'll patch things up and get back together in the near future.
