playing harmonics maaaaan ive always had a tough time doin that, i know u have to have a really light touch to do it. and well guess im a lil heavy handed. anyone else ever had a problem playing harmonics? | |

The natural harmonics at the 7th and 12th frets are relatively easy with the ones at the 5th a little more difficult. But you're correct, it's all about touch. Especially with artificial harmonics played using a "classical" technique. With an overdriven electric guitar sound, using the very edge of the pick you can get those screaming harmonics that Billy Gibbons uses so easily.

That's the low E natural harmonic at the 12th fret and then a natural harmonic arpeggio using the top 3 notes (G,B,E) across that fret. You can do it.

I tune with harmonics all the time (well, when its a quick tune and I'm not using the tuner in my FX processor). The problem might be your right hand palm touch instead of your actual picking. I remember that was probably the most difficult thing for me to get right at first. Muting the string with your right hand (if you play right handed) will get you your clearest tone, but you just have to work on it. Start by letting the back of your hand rest on the strings while you're picking. Work on muting. Once you have muting down, you'll be amazed at how fast and natural getting a harmonic will become. | |
