Yeah Voo Doo wasn't his best effort, not by any means. He fell in love with this murmur-speak singing style and it just wasn't effective.

Thanks Murph. However, eventhough most of your buddies swear his 2nd album is the bomb, I love his first album still dammit. Also, you said we were supposed to get together for a nightcap absolut martini . What's up w/ that Murph? Are you scared of me? whip spank

b]Well, there is no question that he is an excellent studio musician and songwriter. He has proven that time over again. Hopefully, his new album will reflect the nature of his true genius and showcase his originality like his debut album did in my opinion. His following album relied too much on Prince and James Brown influences which made it too commercial in my opinion and that's why it sold better[/b].[/color]

prince and james brown? you forgot about sly, funkadelic, stevie, etc also. the only think "commercial" about voodoo was the untitled video

true. well, kinda. with "left and right" it seems like they were trying to create
a lead single, you know? also, they didn't put "devil's pie" on there at the last
minute for nothing. it's kinda out of place on the record. so, i guess they (the
label?) wanted some more accessible music. these two tracks connect q-tip,
primo, meth and redman to the album. not bad. names that speak to the
urban market.

out of curiosity, does anyone know if he's been sentenced for his DUI charges? There's a rumor blazing around Europe that he's going away for a WHILE and musicians over here are losing their minds thinking that they lost their 'patron saint of organic soul music'!!!!!

If you'e calling D'Angelo the "patron saint of organic soul music" then you better make Raphael Saadiq the God then.

I like D'Angelo, but I prefer Maxwell. I just hate that Maxwell had to compromise after Embrya becuase his first three releases were very good. I love Urban Hang Suite, Maxwell MTV Unplugged EP, and Embrya. Now was a little too commercial.

You can say that Urban Hang Suite was a little commercial too!

The album cover of Voodoo kind of reminds me of Prince's Dirty Mind. The back cover just scares me. What is the woman doing with that chicken? Could she be performing black magic in Africa? I loved most of the material on the album like Spanish Joint, his cover version of Feel Like Makin' Love, Send It On, Chicken Grease, Untitled, and Africa. The thing that really disturbs me about the album is that it runs a little too long--over almost 80 minutes.
