WHFS, the 80's and Progressive Pop

Way back, one afternoon in DC, around 1980, I was trying to flip the radio dial to one of my favorite funk stations, OK 100...I turned too far to the left ...and heard the strains of what turned out to be Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers".... and I was immediately hooked ...I thought, "What station is this?"... I had grown up on R&B ,Jazz, Funk and even Classical, but most of the Pop I heard was through "Top 40" radio...But now I had stumbled on WHFS ,a progressive free - format "College"-Radio station -- that began my introduction into all the stuff I wasn't hearing on the rest of the Dial...They don't exist in the same way anymore, but this is a tribute to the 80's sounds they introduced to me over the next decade...

Very cool, K! Look here, u would have gotten along well with my ex-girlfriend from Jr.High and high school. She turned me on to David Sylvian and The Smiths. To this day, "Shoplifters Of The World" is one of my all-time favorite songs. That chorus is "super stooooopid"!

I remember turning to that station as well and hearing Nina Hagen. I thought it was the strangest thing ever. Then I got hooked on WHFS and loved the disc jockeys there. Free-format for the most part. I think Tom Terrell was the funk dj. He would play odd Prince songs and Fishbone. I got turned on to so many bands by that station. Sadly they sold out and then even sold out again recently to Spanish radio. Thanks for recalling those days.

Yup!....and they would never play the obvious hit stuff, they played all the album tracks you usually never got to hear...

I just put 'em real close together, backspacing to edit out most of the space between them....

I was raised in PG County....when I was a little kid, it was all about WPGC and Q107 (it was on Q107 that I first heard Rapper's Delight on the Top 5 at 5...I will never forget that evening). Junior high...I was listening to Howard Stern in the morning and Adam Smasher in the evening on DC/101. High school...it was all about WHFS!! Good thread.

I once made my dad take me to one of Stern's live broadcasts when I was about 13. This was back in the day when Stern had a mustache and a fro and was doing "Your mama" jokes. To this day, when something about Stern hits the news (FCC fines, usually), my dad calls to tell me that Howard's in trouble again. lol.

That was around the time I landed in L.A. and K-ROQ was handling the bulk of that material.
Coming from a recent fusion immersion, outside of groups you've listed (XTC, Dolby, Scritti, Jackson) this sound didn't immediately appeal to me. Even some early Tom Petty found its way into this format.

K-ROQ and beyond, things I stumbled into during this time period.
(some might be considered Progressive others Rock and still others (ugh) New Wave)...

Believe it or not, there are still some wild, wild, west format college stations out there.
Ones where the playlist ranges from Sun Ra to Hendrix to...uhm...Tribal Disorder.

Don't forget Dramarama. Good call on Oingo Boingo, KROQ loves that band.

Yup, it sounds like we were gettin' the same immersion - Oingo Boingo, King Crimson, Dolby, XTC, Genesis, and not only progressive Pop, Rock and New Wave, and WHFS also played ECM-Chamber/Jazz, Folk, Fusion, World, and Ethereal and Soundtrack music out there, and it was all bunched together:

Man, you are bringing back some great memories. I only wish I still had the tapes I made off of WHFS. Does anyone remember the BBC top ten 10 program that use to come on DC101 on Saturday nights.
