lol Funny how Tori fans say they can't hear Kate's influence in her work and yet claim she has similarities with Zeppelin.

Tori & Zeppelin sound NOTHING like each other. What is this? Crackheads united or something? lol

I don't hear the similarities to Zepplin or Kate. I was just pointing out that she's said on numerous occasions that she was influenced by them. I think Tori sounds like Tori. Especially after hearing Kate now.

Being influenced is one thing but saying that Tori sounds like Zeppelin is something else altogether. And say what you will about Kate, but the first time I heard Tori she straight away reminded me of Kate. That was the reason that I bought Little Earthquakes.
Maybe you just don't want to hear the similarities, eh? wink

I certainly can hear SOME similarities and draw SOME comparisons, but I don't think Tori is the ripoff soundalike that many paint her to be.

I bought 'The Sensual World' in 1989 and really liked that album and I can honestly say when I first heard 'Little Earthquakes' a few years later, I did not once think of Kate Bush. Sarah McLachlan, yes. Kate, no.

No, I don't either. But I think Tori has without doubt lifted certain stylings of Kate's and twisted them into something her own. But I hear that in Bjork's stuff, too. It's no bad thing.

Hope you're also still enjoying my fave album. wink

Oh well. lol No harm in hearing different things. But the first time I heard Silent All These Years I immediately thought of Kate.

I've been listening to it non-stop since I got it. biggrin Most of it I quite enjoy.

And what do you see as things Kate originated that Tori lifted from her.

Something in the way the songs just wrap around you. I can't really place it, tho'. lol
But also the playful quirkiness, the not being afraid to sound ridiculous if the song demands it of you (which is where Bjork comes into it for me, too). And something in the often just plain weird backing vocals which can sometimes seem to go against the direction of the actual songs themselves.

Or how about going straight for The Beekeeper? That one seems the most Zeppelinesque to me.

I'm taking this statement back. Today I was listening to Tori with this Zeppelin idea in mind. And what I have to say is that much of Scarlet's Walk does indeed sound a lot like Zeppelin. There were about 4 songs through and through I could hear Zeppelin. I thought maybe I was just on the Tori drug, but then I listened to The Beekeeper and that did not sound like Zeppelin at all, except the cover song, imo, which is why I mentioned it before.

I'd really like to hear Zeppelin do a cover of Pancake. Hypothetically, of course.

I did too. Mostly, its that they have similar voices and vocal stylings. As I got into Tori, I saw more and more how different she was from Kate, but there is definitely an influence there. Outside of their voices, and quirky lyrics, they really go in different directions.

To me, the artist with the closest sound to Kate's is Peter Gabriel (and not just because they have collaborated on more than one occassion). His weird, esoteric lyrics, coupled with even weirder, more esoteric sounds, is right in line with Kate. I'm not saying that Tori doesn't skew towards bizzare and esoteric herself, just that she goes about it in a very different way than Gabriel and Bush.

In Tori, I see Zepplin, but I also see a whole lot of Queen, Bowie, The Doors and Joni Mitchell.

Just be forewarned that her stuff is Zepplin INFLUENCED. Don't expect to hear a whole lot of Page-inspired riffs. To me, her stuff borrows more of the energy of Plant, and the ballsy-yet-spiritual feel of their music. It may take a few listens to really pick up on it.

Oh, and you simply MUST hear the cover she does with Plant of "Down By The Seaside" on Encomnium (if you haven't already got that disc). They completely re-interpret that song, making it sound more like something concocted by The Doors. A buddy of mine, who's a Zep nut himself, once remarked that the original sounded all happy and what-not, but the Plant/Amos cover makes you wonder what sort of sinister things these people are up to!

I didn't expect there would be ANY Page inspired riffs. biggrin I can imagine though how she couldbe more Plant influenced. My husband is sort of a fan of her, and plays one of her albums (not sure which one confuse ) from time to time. I haven't really paid much attention though to be honest. I'll ask him which albums he has though already because I have no idea what's going on in his collection. It's too massive. lol

Aren't there Hendrix inspired riffs in her cover of "If 6 Was 9"?

Well, her piano certainly is distorted to all hell in that one. So at least the sound of it is Hendrix inspired.
