i love being one of the org's resident bowie geeks. geek

well, you have the album version of gene genie on disc one, and you have two other versions on the bonus disc - the single mix and a live version. i haven't put the single mix version of gene genie under the microscope to detail the differences, but it could just be that the single version was mixed differently or had a slightly different edit.

honestly, i think there were some "WTF?!" choices for the bonus disc on that one, but i guess they wanted to throw on enough material to justify a second disc, and there are some fans and collectors who wanna have EVERYthing, no matter how subtle the differences are or how bad the quality might be. shrug

the differences between the single version and album version are fairly subtle. unlike with Rebel Rebel, where the single version is very different.

the single version of 'rebel rebel' is pretty much an alternate recording of the album version, isn't it?

I love that you love Bowie! He is my number 2, after Prince of course.
I will make a recomendation to you: If you haven't had a chance to hear a Canadian guy named Hawksley Workman, you could do a lot worse than to check him out.
There's a little bit of Bowie in him, but he truly does his own thing. The reason I mention him is that, after 4 albums, I consider him to be very close to the talent stratosphere of Prince and Bowie, in terms of songwriting and musicianship.

it's the same basic song, but its an entirely different recording... some very interesting vocal and percussion effects. i actually like it, although most people prefer the more familiar album version.

Well, my best friend played his first three albums for me when used to drive around in her car, which was a few years ago. It immediately struck me that he was an amazing talent. The first song I ever heard was "Striptease", and believe me, it grabs you.
The guy's songs are filled with passion, desire, sex, and love. Oh, and he has much of the charisma of Prince and Bowie, which is another reason I rate him so highly.

If you search for him at the canadian amazon website, you'll get some good listener reviews. I highly recomend either "For him and the girls" or "Last night we were the Delicous Wolves" to start.

i like 'em about equally. the only version i don't care for is that mess he re-recorded for the reality deluxe edition...though that arrangement didn't sound horrible live.

yeah i agree, i didn't care for that version at all. but i don't really like "updated" versions of songs usually. he did that w/ space oddity at the end of the 70's and look back in anger in the late 80's, i believe... and i hated both of them.

yeah, i wasn't thrilled with 'em either, but by the same token they weren't exactly '1999:the new master' bad. just really unnecessary. i like the 'look back in anger' remake, though i think it could use some serious editing. there's no reason for the intro to that song to be so long. zzz

Me too. Although a Bowie geek would surely know it's spelled "Jean". wink

just playin'.

But yeah, that Aladdin Sane bonus disc is bunk. I mean, if they weren't gonna go all out, they could've at least hooked us up with the "Drive-In Saturday" edit. Hell, all of Pin Ups would've been nice too.

I love that single version. It takes a great song and makes it even more fun.

I think that version sounds more like the rest of the album than the standard album version.

i was scared there was gonna be a deluxe edition of pin-ups and i was gonna plunk down twenny bucks for that damn thing...though really, when i'm in the right mood, pin-ups can be a downright kick-ass album.

I agree. It seems like that and "Rebel Rebel" were good palette cleansers for Bowie too. I like that he used a covers album not to fulfill a contract or to be a place holder during a long break, but instead to get the last of his Ziggy ya-ya's out of his system. It takes all of the angst and confusion of that period and makes it kinda fun. So many of those covers were just killer.

What I don't understand is why Hunky Dory didn't get the delux treatment. There's a buttload of stuff that could've been included on that 2nd disc and many consider it to be his greatest album. I'm still holding out hope for a 35th anniversary edition of that one.
