Paris, Nicole on the outs

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie - the super-rich childhood chums who made The Simple Life a hit for Fox — are feuding.

"It's no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends," Hilton, 24, sniped in a statement released Tuesday, offering no explanation. Pretending to be best pals on the show would be unfair to fans, Hilton says, adding, "I don't want to be fake." The lanky heiress says, "Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm ever going to say about it."

For the time being, Richie, 23, is staying mum. Calls to her L.A. spokeswoman weren't returned Wednesday.

Last week, Hilton said Kimberly Stewart, 25, Rod's daughter, would be replacing Richie on the fourth season of The Simple Life. Fox says it's weighing options for the show's next season. Richie remains under contract.

It's all very "high school," says Lori Majewski, executive editor at Us Weekly. But circumstances certainly are different from when Simple Life hit the airwaves in December 2003. Back then, Paris was famous for being famous, and Nicole was her sidekick.

Now, Richie "has done a 360 and has become a fashion icon," Majewski says. A newly slimmed-down Richie is able to land magazine covers on her own.

"Maybe this is Paris' way of making sure she stays in the limelight that she thinks she deserves," Majewski says. In order to protect her money-making image, Hilton "needs another sidekick, not an equal."


anybody know what Rod Stewart's daughter looks like? is she kinda frumpy like Nicole was the first season?

Yes and reports were that this pissed Nicole off. The news of that might have broken after they taped the third "Simple Life" because they seem to get along well there. I don't watch the "Simple Life" religiously but it's a great funny ass show. But without Nicole (who was much funnier than Paris)...there's not point! I won't watch this new and screwed up verison of the show. Now if Nicole where to do HER own "Simple Life" spin off, I might be into that...

I can proudly say that I have never ever watched an episode of that show.

Paris tried to say it was her show and she could do what she wanted with it. It seems she can't because Nicole is under contract.

You know what? On this show, she seems to have Nicole doing all the stupid stuff. Why is that?
