Most soulfull singer?

I have a big cd-collection, very diverse also, but when i am longing for some SOULfull singing (not talking about 'soul' as a style of music, but soul as expressing yourselve as deeply as possible) i always seem to grab cd's by Van Morrison out of my racks. When it comes to downright soulfull singing he is my big favourite. The emphasis on deep spirituality in his lyrics only strengthens that feeling.

Some of his most soulfull moments:
- Listen to the lion (from 'Saint dominics preview')
- Angelou (from 'Into the music')
- When Heart is open (from 'Common sense')
- Carrickfergus (from 'Irish Heartbeat')
- The Healing game (from 'the Healing game')

The way his singing (and lyrics) touch me is so devine that its hard to find ways to explain it: spiritual connection ? Yes, i think so, and thats even deeper then heartfelt, its soulfull magic...

No, I love his music, but as a soul singer, he's overrated...
As an overall singer, he's a true genius...

If I want to listen to a pure soul singer I go with Otis Redding.... wink

I'll add William Bell to your list. I saw Solomon in SF last month. A great show, but the King of Rock and Soul is getting rather large (although he has always been somewhat of a big guy). It took them several minutes to lift him from his wheelchair into his throne, but his band was slammin and his voice was golden. Just glad I got to see this legend.

Good call Stax.

A few years ago Mr. "Born Under A Bad Sign" Bell sent me...

...A Portrait Is Forever - http://www.mindspring.com/~wilbe/

Straight-up, no-frills R&B in the Stax/Volt tradition he was so much a part of. nod

Haven't seen Solomon Burke live yet.
Saw him on either Letterman or Conan a month or so ago doing Make Do With What You Got.
His voice was still in fine form.

Mahalia Jackson, Shirley Caeser, Mavis Staples and Etta James also come to mind.

They were listed because the author of the thread didn't specify genre...

"not talking about 'soul' as a style of music, but soul as expressing yourselve as deeply as possible"

That being the case, those ladies definitely qualify. nod

Your right that Etta was a great blues artist (recording for Chess for much of her carreer), but she was undoubtedly a soul artist as well (recording some of her best material at soul-central Muscle Shoals Studios). She even did jazz and, later in her carreer, some rock.

Dunno, man. Look at the likes of Thom Yorke & Marvin Gaye. They both mastered the laid back approach. Didn't stop them being soulful.
