You gotta love "Kind of Blue". Davis and Coltrane were the unstoppable juggernauts of Jazz. nod

I respect his talent but I can never get into jazz.

I'm here. I haven't checked out the boxset yet. I have over a dozen Miles LPs, but I haven't even scratched the surface. My most recent purchase was Quiet Nights, a wonderful set.

Yeah, I've been thinking about buying a Miles album and giving it a serious listen for a couple weeks.

Imo, this boxset is not for the timid or casual Miles Davis listener.
It is for someone that has the patience to sit through all the takes and the interest in hearing the creative process at work. If you're willing to wade very deeply into a spontaneous improvisation ocean, come on in...the water's fine.

Especially the creative process used in this case where Miles only gives the musicians a hint of where/when/how about the tunes if that. Musical constructions from the ground up, a blank canvas, warts and all.
A documentary with not a lot of talk, but quite a bit of inspired playing by some stellar musicians.

Many of the extras (outside of the final versions of Right Off and Yesternow that made up the original A Tribute to Jack Johnson release) are again the creative process at work on tunes that end up on Live-Evil, Big Fun, Get Up With It and Directions.

There are many that will hate it just because of the experimental nature. It's not for everyone.
Something that Prince probably should have heard before he did N.E.W.S.

Kind of Blue is the cliched choice, but honestly, it might be the best Miles album to start with. Other "starter" albums include:

pre-electric

Miles Davis -- Vol. I (Blue Note)

Birth of the Cool

'Round About Midnight

Milestones

Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet

electric/post-electric

Bitches Brew (which I myself don't have because I am still digging on pre-electric Miles)

Tutu

Just want to be on this thread of cool.

Love the Jack Johnson box set (great points t/A as usual) and love most of Miles.

I guess i own to less Miles Davis cd's to really call myselve a fan... but his playing, his phrasing, the soul he puts into it, is pure magic....

To be honest, that guy played some lines that are so genious and 'right', lines that did touch me so deeply, in a way no Prince song ever touched me...

Well...I'm SO psyched 2 c all the Miles fans checking in. I recently fell into a "treasure chest" full of Miles Performance videos. Mostly, they're from my favorite period /1968-1971/ and all of them are truly breathtaking. I think they come from European Television...I just put them on DVD, and I haven't stopped watching. I think my favorite Miles set is "On the Corner", which at the time was considered pure blasphomy. IMO, it's the genesis of breakbeats. Check it out.

On the Corner
is one of my favorites as well because its a big fuck you. I love the way he challenges his audience/the listener. In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Sketches of Spain and Porgy & Bess are my favorite Davis recordings.

Miles is the man!! Not a week goes by where I don't put something on the CD player by him. Miles work has all kinds of stuff going on where it just keeps you interested.(jazz,bebop,fusion,rock,ambieance).. Right now I'm digging the "Bitches Brew" 4 CD boxset...and hello to everyone. I've been "lurking" this board for 6 years and finally decided to join. This is one of the COOLEST sites on the net!

Did anyone see the Herbie Hancock tour last year? It was called "Directions in Music", and it was a tribute 2 Miles and Trane. He had Michael Brecker, Roy Hargrove, and Brian Blade with him. AWESOME SHOW

I love to mention the classical piece he performed on "sketches of spain" (sorry, i forgot the name), but this collaboration with Gill Evans is one of the finest pieces of music ever put on vinyl (and, later, cd of course)
