I may be late, but I discovered that Nat Morris does a a website devoted to the Scene and his production business. Please e-mail this brother with pictures or if you know any former dancers or you were a former dancer yourself - help build his site. I have tapes of other local dance shows from other cities. The Scene, thought poorly produced....has to be the best local dance show ever!!! I remember seeing The Time, Vanity 6 (remember the Vanity6 look alike contest?), The Brothers Johnson, Was Not Was, George Clinton....Nat Morris managed to get some great acts local and national on his show. I remember seeing portions of the Dirty Mind tour on his show!!! Remember Cheryl Peoples, Lorenzo, Blair, (the Prince wanna be's)Eric Burns & Andre Hines?? Anyway hope anyone out there can help him out. I wish I could, but I was only a fan.

That's funny.. I am fom Cleveland, but while growing up, I would spend my summers in Detroit, with my grandparents. I would miss channel 62 sooooo much, when I had to come back to Cleveland. That was the first black oriented TV station that I knew of.. pre-BET.

My cousins used to live down the street from from Andre Hines.

My favorite commercial that they would play during the show was some corny commercial for a dry cleaners.. where there was a guy complaining at some other cleaners that his sleeves were too short on his suit.. (while looking at his sleeves), the store clerk tells him "Man, you down, you down!!", and the customer would say, " Yeah, it'd be beter if my sleeves were too!!"

I guess you had to be there back then for it to be funny.

I could go on.. but that's enuf for now..... Memories.

Ahh..this is great. I grew up watching the Scene. Everyday at 6 O'clock, I would make sure my tv was tuned into channel 62. The folks that danced on that show were
like local celebs. Does anyone remember LaWanda?

I don't have anything to contibute to the site, but I have bookmarked it, so I hope they are able to get enough people to send in info about some of the dancers on the show.

Yes u know ur a true Detroiter if you remember "The Scene." I too was a lil' youngin' but I remember the theme song to the show, when R.J Watkins would host the show-before it became The New Dance Show (don't hurt 'em!!)

My older sisters and their friends remember it when they were kids. I remember the Colonial Merchadise commercials with the 3 guys dancing and singing.(lol!!!)

Those Miley & Miley Shrimp Shack commercials too.

Just makes you remember when Detroit & the people had it together in a sense of a community. Some of us still do, it was just fun times.

As far as Thew New Dance Show, I use to crack up ecvery time J.B ( the man with the cape and the "moves") would dance and let's not forget Aunt Betty!!

Oh yeah!(lol!!!) Henry's Palace and Watts Club on Fenkell Ave. Those commercials were halarious too.

OMG!!! I was just talking to a friend the other day about The Scene. I'm originally from Detroit and was glued to the TV everyday from 6-7pm. I remember some of the dancers...

Jawan and Tanya (they used to always dress alike and were dance partners, her mom made the clothes).

Moses (The Morris Day look-a-like...he didn't look like Morris but he imitated on a regular basis)

Those two Prince look-a-like's

Matthew (the white guy with the really nice acemtric haircut)

Yvonne (the lady that was known for the dance "The Snake")

Jazell (she was that really wild dancer that would spend her arm around really fast and jump all over the place ).

The guy with the glasses (can't think of his name but he was kind of dorky).

There are sooo many more that I would recognize if I saw pics...

I remember they changed the name to "The New Dance Show" and had some of the same dancers from "The Scene" and RJ Watkins was the new host.

I remember the show was so popular, the dancer's received fan mail from viewer's that they would read on air. They even had dance contests and you could call in and vote on your favorite dance group.

They even started showing "The Scene Back In The Day" on a local cable station and I was lucky enough to tape the episode when Vanity 6 was on there...Nat Morris and Vanity were both high as ever...he asked Susan her age and she said 16 years old ...he asked her what her parents thought about her dressing in lingerie at 16 and she said they were proud of her and cool with it.

I would loooove to see The Scene again.

Just reading this thread seriously turned back the clock. My dad (when he was alive) knew the host of the Scene, and actually appeared on the show like once or twice back in like 83 or 84. I swear I would DIE to obtain this footage. Seeing my old man gettin down


MistyCotton, hopefully you made some progress on the footage deal. I may even have an old NDS episode (or 2?) laying around on my old pile of VHS tapes. I'll trade you a copy if you still have yours.

Good grief. No, y'all didn't bring back one of my BIGGEST middle school and high school memories.

To this day, my husband still quotes, "I wish my SLEEVES was down" at some appropriate moment.

We used to think those Scene Dancers were the shiz-nit. My husband even danced on the New Dance Show for a short time (he was just my boyfriend at the time).

I'm excited about the website. "Sherman, set the 'Way-Back Machine'"

About Nat Morris: I can't vouch for the Jersey scene. Maybe he has family out there, who knows. I thought he had some sort of business out here in the D, but on the other end, I can totally see why he'd move out to other areas. Detroit has seen better days

Yes, yes. The Scene, Mojo, "The Beat", Video Hits (on channel 9), Good Rockin' Tonite (also on channel 9), TV 50 VIDEOS, Stars of Tomorrow, ODYSSEY, etc etc. Us detroiters had it good!
