I'm not even sure what Anxiety means by 'oaty', but it sounds about right.

well, by 'oaty', i mean that there's more jangle than melody, more subtext than concept, and lots of stuff that floats around in the music that could be illustrated than implied...that's probably not much help in defining what i mean, and i know it's a purely subjective thing to throw out there, but usually when i hear a band that sounds earnest and bland and more into the integrity of its mission than they are into making what i consider to be a decent effort to be colorful or engaging, the word i usually use for that is "oaty". like eating a handful of oats. lol

That's really terrifically clever - the only problem is probably that you have to explain to people like me what you mean every time you use the term, so in the end it would probably just be easier to write the full description rather than use the expression.

Sorry, had to take a break there...to eat dinner and to snort wine through my nose at "Riding the Bus Don't You Mess With My Special Sister Rosie O'Donnell." Funny stuff.

Anyway, yeah, "One More Hour" is amazing. That's the song that completely sold me on SK. They're also really amazing live. And honestly, they've gotten better and better. After all the bullshit following 9/11, One Beat was a really amazingly cathartic album for me. Corin gets less bleat-y on it, and for the first time it really sounds like they're having fun. Anyone who's been on the fence about them (or knows enough to make fun of Christgau...who I do really respect, you got me there), should check out that album. The new one is kinda "oaty."

PS. I'd put the Go-Betweens in that S-K, MC5 category too! Which is what I love about "Horsebreaker Star"...not afraid to be pretty.

Oh, actually I like Robert Christgau too, though his writing style can leave me a little exasperated sometimes. I'm a faithful consumer guide reader and I make a point of checking out the pazz and jop poll every year. Jeez, I'm backtracking all over the place here...

I'll keep an eye out for the album - the prospect of a less ernest and slightly toned down SK does sound appealing.

ha ha, absolutely - I actually think it's very sad that Horsebreaker Star couldn't find an audience, because that album could have had an enormous amount of appeal to a broad range of people - definitely not like SK or MC5 in that regard! I mean, I could imagine my granny tapping her toe to Open Invitation or something like that and saying "aw, that's lovely...".

Right, he must be at least as photogenic as Shawn Colvin, fer god's sake?

And, yeah, Christgau's writing can be torture, and lately, his taste, but he has turned me on to a lot of good music I'd never have heard otherwise.

I bought the new Go-Betweens album yesterday, and I've gotta say that so far it sounds absolutely phenomenal. I think the McLennan tracks are the best batch of songs that he's ever contributed to a G-B album, in fact. As usual I like the Forster songs slightly less, but his tracks are among the best he's ever done as well. Personally I think this is the first album they've recorded since reuniting that ranks with their prime eighties material. Rachel Worth and Bright Yellow Bright Orange were worthwhile albums, but I think this is better by miles.

I do think that the sound of the album is a little too 'bright': it could have used a warmer, more organic production. but the songs are there. If you're a fan of this band, I'd strongly recommend giving this a second chance.
