hmph!

I could just as easily (and just as stupidly) argue that everyone who likes the Beatles has a screw loose simply because I don't like them.

nod People can get really pricky about the "infallibles". nod

Add to my list of hated "classics":

AC/DC
The Eagles
The Beach Boys
Pink Floyd
Elvis Presley
Bob Dylan

While I don't like their music at all, nor do I like the Beatles, I can understand and recognize the impact that they have had. Their music just doesn't do it for me- at all.

There is a difference between not liking an artist and not respecting an artist.

I don't like the Beatles.

I don't respect 50 Cent.

lol
I was gonna say I don't like Dylan but I didn't want no bricks flying to my head. lol I can't stand Elvis music either.

And, for the second time this year, I'm gonna say I don't like Earth, Wind, & Fire. That's right fools I said it....AGAIN! Whatchoo gon' do? Huh?

falloff
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

When you are commonly accosted in public for having the nerve to admit that you don't like the Beatles by people who aren't really music fans, things have gone too far. People act like it's a crime to not like their music.

No musical artist should be above being disliked- not the Beatles, not Prince, not anyone. But many Beatles fans (including those surface ones who aren't really into music anyway) don't seem to understand this.

I won’t disagree with that, obviously, but I will happily make the argument that the Beatles are one of the only acts of our era who are indisputably great. I don’t demand that people like them, but I do demand that people recognize their excellence. I believe it was Robert Chistgau who said that not loving the Beatles is as perverse as hating the sun. Well, as far as I’m concerned it’s OK if you don’t like the sun, but show the sun a little respect.

Their greatness is not some myth concocted by a bunch of daft, dope-addled hippies: they wrote and recorded several dozen perfect pop songs that have become standards in a remarkably short period of time. The Beatles musical legacy towers over all popular music of the second half of the century. I don’t believe their peers are the pop/rock acts of their era – their impact is beyond the likes of Dylan or Bowie or the Stones or whoever. The Beatles’ peers are Cole Porter, Louis Armstrong, Irving Berlin - genuine artists who've created a body of work that will transcend the trends of their time.

Pardon me for droning on, but my love of the Beatles is one of the things I take slightly too seriously.

The Beatles were pretty versatile and have written some timeless songs, so yes I find it very hard to believe you could not have a soft spot for any of the hundreds they wrote..... maybe they deserve a 2nd chance razz

I have probably heard over 30 Beatles songs and liked absolutely none of them. Who would merit a second chance after that?

I respect their impact, but I can't stand any of their music that I have heard, including many of the "perfect pop singles" that people praise.

You make some valid points. The Beatles deserve respect, whether one likes their songs or not. They set an incredibly high standard for musical excellence and you don't see any modern-day bands with the same type of impact and influence.

I hate both about equally, but I would probably choose the Beatles- not for the music, though. I know I'd hate it, but I could have a better retort when people say, "But you haven't heard (insert Beatles album here)!" barf

First of all, thank you...

Y'know, the Beatles aren't my favourite band, not by a long shot. My favourite band is probably the Fall, or maybe the Go-betweens or Wire, depending on my mood - but if someone posted on here that the Fall were garbage, just as worthless as fifty cent or whoever, I wouldn't bat an eye. I'd just say 'yeah, they're not for everyone, feel free to hate them, you're welcome to listen to whatever lifts your skirt'.

But when someone says such a thing about the Beatles, I do get a little peeved - for the same reason I get angry when I stumble across a creationist web-site, or see someone who's never read a word of Saul Bellow praising Bret Easton Ellis as a great writer: I get angry because I'm witness to a falsehood, because I just don’t understand how a cogent, rational person could listen to, say...

Julia or For No One or The Night Before or And Your Bird Can Sing or the Abbey Road Medley or Dear Prudence or Blackbird...

or any of astonishing songs they recorded in their brief existence and walking away thinking they'd heard garbage. Those songs clearly aren’t awful – they’re deeply felt masterpieces of craftsmanship of the highest order. There isn’t a musical artist of the last half century who wouldn’t have been proud to write a song half as good as any of those listed above.

But I do take things like this a little too seriously - that's a character flaw on my part, I suppose. So feel free to disregard my ramblings as the words of a somewhat obsessive man who cares about the Beatles slightly too much. I think what I’ve written might read as a personal attack on Moonbeam, and that’s not what I intended – unfortunately I’m just a little too sleepy and drunk and upset about my job right now to rethink my post so that it won’t be interpreted as offensive, so I’m just going to let it stand.
