Her voice is great !!! (although i don't like that whispering , "dog whistle sound" either)
I like "Daydream" , but after that i lost interest , because
i think she'd gotten too commercial

hmmm What exactly do you mean by "too commercial"?

I know y'all want to hate on her because you think she had some crazy mental breakdown.

that usually makes me like a person MORE. Mariah may be able to SANG but her songs are over-produced, cliched and it is the melismatic vomitrocious sound of her voice which bothers me most. i DID like her when i was about 10, when she was as apparently as innocent as i was. but i grew up and so did she and now she's just gross IMO.

Yup. Bottom line, she's got nothing to say. (And, no, neither do Britney, Xtina, et al.)

Why did he post a topic on someone he hates? Spend more time on a real thread with real stories.

I dont waste time on people I cant stand.

I don't hate her at all whatsoever. Maybe you should learn how to read a little better.

The topic mentions nothing about Mariah as a person or artist; I only talked about her singing style.

She has powerful range, sure, but her style of singing is ear poison to me.

The whispery, melodramatic, baby like singing she often goes into is such overkill.

I think that's a symptom she developed on her more recent efforts. "Emotions" (her best record to date, IMHO) features really stunning, powerful vocals that are properly tempered (I still say The Wind is pretty amazing).

It's not her voice that gets on my nerves, it's the type of music she does.

ok, well please elaborate. What type of music are U referring to? Popular music/top 40? What type of music do U want her 2 sing? rock n roll? funk? I don't understand?

Mariah is singing the type of music that the young teenie booper generation wants 2 hear...that's how U sell records nowadys. Sure U lose some artistic freedom when U do that but she wants to remain in the mainstream. That's why we have artist like Prince and Stevie who can give us that true artistic freedom and don't care about charts. But Mariah is not Prince!!!! She is a POP artist who gets the hot producers of the moment and makes hit songs.

She has the type of voice where she can do any type of genre she want's to, but the money is in hiphop/r&b.

I never liked her music from day one when she was an adult contemporary type singer and I like it even less now that she's doing hip hop type music.

As an artist, she's entitled to do what type of music she wants to make money. As a consumer, I'm also entitled to not buy it and also to not like it. A question was asked in the thread title "Who else hates Mariah's singing voice". I answered it truthfully and honestly because I don't hate her voice, I hate her music.

her earlier albums were cool, but they had so much "formula" as like...say that's how 'the system' was making her albums. She had the singles up front of course..then the rest of like 6 or 7 were sentimental slow adult contempo tunes.... bored

Until Butterfly came out, it sounded alot more free.

Just like this album. Its a mix of both personal sounding tunes (Circles, Mine Again, Joyride, Fly... U can tell she wanted to do that type of music) and commercial...but the commercial tunes work this time.

Rainbow, Glitter and Charmbracelet followed the "try to get a hit" type of vein and I feel like she learned that that doesnt work.

I understand why people dont like her..but, she's better than Britney, J.Lo, Ashanti, Whitney's new material, Kylie, list goes on and on...

Its too easy to Mariah bash now days.....shes a mess. Her songs are complete garbage and her one true talent, her voice, is totally non apparent. No one doubts she can sing. i own most of her albums up to butterfly and she has an amazing voice but since then all she seems to do is whine. Im tempted to think that she has perhaps lost some of the range of her voice, maybe through not taking care of it or whatever, but hearing live recordings from the last couple of years, she certainly cant hit the top notes she used to. The same thing has happened to whitney but at least she still belts them out, no messing around. None of this whispering singing.

As for her music, I cant abide it anymore. People call it commercial, maybe it is, but it aint catchy and it aint good. Tired old grooves, paper thin production, no melody, crap hooks, its a waste of time. The girl is a singer, she should sing.

For that song alone you won't see me bashing Mariah. I moved away from her style of music after the album with "One Sweet Day", but I loved everything before that. I can't dog her now that I've moved on.
