Just a simple question, What is your favorite Funk style?

The mid-60's til' mid 70's Horn Driven Funk including JB, Sly and others.

- or -

Late 70's, late 80's Sythesized Funk including Prince, Midnight Star and others.

great album!

oh, even though I like most 80s funk, I'd still take real brass over a synth any day
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Late 1970s/early 1980s mixture of both. Really, it's according to who the artist is. For instance, I love Rick James with horns but when he eliminated them, his music became weaker. With Prince, it's the opposite. I love Prince with synths and when he started using horns, his music became weaker. The Barkays sound good with both. Cameo sounds good with horns too. Actually, I guess I like horns in everyone's music except Prince's. His sound was more futuristic and it made him stand out from the others. When he began using horns, his signature sound was shattered.

Well who says you can't use both? Parliament anyone? Hell Prince has used em both too. Personally I prefer horns, but keyboards is coo' too. Hell look at all the prime uncut funk stevie made with the clavinet fro, though he was replacing the guitar and bass sound with keyboards, rather than the horns.

Earth Wind & Fire, ConFunkShun, Cameo Parliament, The Bar-Kays The Ohio Players Chicago. Syhths all cool but they just don't convey the emontions that the horns can. also not sure about this, but I think horn arrangement is more complicated than syhthsinzer programming.

nod Vain, you hit right on the head. For most Funk artist, Horns is an enhancement. But for P, it detracted from his sound tremendously. During the Musicology Tour, P did the horns thing to death when he needed to leave well enough alone.

Amen!

Imagine The Godfather surrounded by synths. disbelief

Synths can work in an arrangement, but they can't replace real horns.
Now there are some samplers that will fool you.

These are all acts that I love and that I use as an example for my own music, but I love real horns too. Tough choice that I am not going to make, hehehe!
