Smokey.
He doesn't have to strain like Prince. And it's a rolling warble, not a screech. As he ages, that voice hasn't changed a bit. He still sings like a bird. | |

Prince's sounds much more strained than Smokey's. I think Smokey's sounds so natural and so smooth. Even though he's almost 30 years older than Prince, I still think he's falsetto sounds smoother. Prince has more vocal range overall, but Smokey kills him on that falsetto. Smokey has the 2nd best falsetto of all-time. Number one: Ron muthafuckin' Isley. Like Smokey, the man is old as dirt, and still manages to let that thing just pour out so silky smooth. The voice has been untouched by age. And number 3 is Curtis Mayfield. I was watching a Curtis concert on VH-1 Classic, recently. I believe it was from sometime in the late 80s before he became paralyzed. Amazing how effortlessly he sang. Prince is farther down, but still in the top 10 somewhere. Mick Jagger's falsetto is very slept on. "Fool to Cry" and "Worried About You"? Shit, he tore it up. It's a jungle out there. | |

Also El Deabrge is and extremely underated vocalist with an almost natural un forced falsetto. Other than El, Maxwell, and the late Wayne Cooper NOBODY in my opinion can touch Prince's falsetto | |

"Get Down" Billy Brown of Ray Goodman and Brown (aka the Moments) still has the best damn falsetto out there...even at 50-sumthin, he still sounds like silk on "Love on a Two Way Street" and Sunday, take a listen to How Can Love So Right Be So Wrong, or My Prayer...Russell Thompkins was the man back in the day, but he can barely register those notes now...Harold "Eban" Brown, his replacement in the Stylistics, can hit all of Thompkins notes on cue...Phillip Bailey USED to have a great falsetto, but that shit sounds like a dirty cat at a VD clinic now...he should stop trying cuz it's like watching an overweight gymnast on the balance beams

I know this is a Prince website and believe me, I'm far from one to be biased towards Prince, but when it comes to falsettos, Prince's is my favorite. It's hard to explain but Prince's falsetto just has a certain sassiness about it that no one else can match except maybe Ebonee Webb. I haven't seen anyone else that can scream like Prince either. I love Prince's falsetto, even if sometimes he forces too much on it...
I think his falsetto sounds better on slow jam, but sucks on up tempo beat... This is why I hate so much songs like I wanna be your lover or his early songs... He forces too much... On slow jams instead (like Crazy you) he sounds great, like a female sometimes, I love it... | |
