The movie has some fun moments, but it feels like it was hastily thrown together. It's as if the producers said "Let's gather up a bunch of the hottest rappers, let's add New Edition to make the young girls happy, and hey, let's invite Sheila E. to the party so that the 'Purple Rain' crowd will be interested too"...lol...it feels more like a party than a legitimate movie. There's not much of a storyline here.Years later, even Run DMC were quoted as saying that this film is "whack". I'll stick with the superior 'Beat Street' Run DMC said it was a wack movie? RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Like many teens in that time, I was into rappin and breaking and so I would look forward to seeing films like these because it reflected what was going on at that time. It was kind of like a urban Woodstoock. 'Beat Street' was da bomb!

It was kind of like a urban Woodstoock. Beat Street was like an After School Special. Not my favorite of the genre (if it even is a full genre). Still I feel I must give it some props. Stan Lathan directed it, and, well, his daughter (Sanaa) is beautiful. And...uh...I used to breakdance to the title track.

Back in the day, I went to see this movie soley because I had such a huge crush on Sheila E. It was hardly a masterpiece, but it was darned entertaining.
BTW, look closely during the scene in Sheila's apartment, and you'll notice a "1999" era poster of Prince on her wall! [Edited 4/11/05 11:51am] Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

There's a nice piece on there with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis talking about the writing and recording of Tender Love. They even do a duet. Tender Love is the jam. OK! It actually came out in the fall/winter of 1985. I'm not sure about it being the "Carwash of the '80's", though. (one of my all time favorites btw) Anyways, I was a 13 year old B-boy at the time and a very big fan of RUN-DMC, so I went to see it in the theater when it came out! I loved it ofcourse and still do! Got dat shit on vhs so you know I'm true! BUT!!! TENDER LOVE just happens to be my most favorite song in the entire world and has been since it came out in the movie and on radio!!! So holy shit! So I'm gonna have to find that on dvd and get that piece with Jam & Lewis!!! Yes, Tender Love is the jam!!!

[Edited 4/10/05 8:01am] OKAY ITS NOT THAT SERIOUS.... ITS ONLY ONE YEAR APART... SO IT WAS MADE AROUND THE SAME TIME... I wasn't trying to be a smartass. Sorry if it looked that way. I was just giving the correct year of the film before people started picking up on it and turning it into a "Purple Rain" vs. "Krush Groove" thread. Andy is a four letter word.

Both films beat the hell out of "Breakin" though.....it had the best soundtrack but it was the worst film. Andy is a four letter word.
