Battle of the Disco jams: Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" Vs.Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" On several of my disco compilations,these songs appear back-to-back and for good reason.Have you ever noticed the similarities between the two songs?
***same label (Motown) ***same year (1976) ***both songs start slow,then quickly become faster ***both songs have a similiar bassline ***both songs are remakes ("Love Hangover" was recorded by Sylvester and The 5th Dimension before Diana got to it..."Don't Leave Me This Way" was originally recorded by Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes in 1975)  so which song is superior? | |

Due to the recent Diana Ross vocal bashing on the org I would rather defend "Love Hangover"!
But I think "Don't Leave Me This Way" is better, and it's a good thing since Thelma Houston had WAY less hits than Diana. | |

I grew up with these in my house. As a kid, I liked Thelma's better. "Love Hangover" sounded kinda spooky to me when I was little for some reason! Then, as I got a little older and started playing instruments, I really fell in love with Donna's "Love To Love You". Then, I realized how that song was very much in touch with "Love Hangover". At the end of Diana's cut, the phrase "Love To Love You" is repeated by the female backup singers. So, I tended to lean towards "Love Hangover". Now, I just dig them both. Good info though about The 5th Diminsion. Wasn't hip to that! SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

DLMTW for certain! That song makes me so happy. I always have to sing along with it - which is ironic, since the song is so depressing. The ORG - the only place where you can be called a wigger, a racist and a Nazi and be banned for defending yourself. It's so hard being white nowadays...

Great vs. thread because they are very similar. They start out slow and then get fast. I always play the two back to back. I'm leaning more towards "Love Hangover". Andy is a four letter word. | |

I love Love Hangover. It's one of the last great things she ever did. But I can't give it to Miss Ross. She's had it too damn good. She gets to be DIANA ROSS. So don't give this to her. Miss Ross got to be THE fuckin Supreme, got preferentially treated by Mr. Gordy--to the detriments of Ms. Wells, Reeves, Knight, etc. The bitch got to be the princess of Motown, and then it's Queen.
So give it up for little ol' Thelma. 'Don't Leave Me This Way' is a masterpiece. | |
