I too prefer going to see live bands instead of dance clubs.
CBGB's Bowery Ballroom Roxy Webster Hall Irving Plaza (actually, I'm going there for the first time tomorrow night, but I'm sure I'll like it.) The Pyramid (I actually went with some orgers to that place for their 80's night.) I still haven't gone to the Culture Club or Situation yet though. It's all 80's/all night at those spots. CB's is kinda crap, unfortunately. when i lived in new york, i resided about a block away from CBGBs for two years. i mighta gone there two or three times. CB's Gallery has some cool stuff going on sometimes. i went to a really fun homocorps show hosted by justin bond once, and they were selling a lot of cool folk/outsider art for like $20 a piece.
my favoritest NYC club of all time was squeezebox. to me, squeezebox is a legend of the '90s the way studio 54 was a legend of the '70s, and i hope its glory days gets its due someday, because my GOD that place kicked ass. i went to the 'sequel', 'motherfucker', last fall at the roxy. it was an incredibly good time. most of the other places i liked to hang out in NYC don't exist anymore - cake, tunnel bar (not to be confused with the tunnel), some of the funky divey east village rock'n'roll fag bars. half of the music i listen to now, i discovered on jukeboxes in those e.vill bars and clubs.

Cool, I went to the "Motherfucker" ball this year at the Roxy. Bloc Party put on an awesome show.
Too many damn hipsters though. And I didn't even get laid at the end of the night. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

You know, I actually wanted to check out some of the 80's themed clubs back when I was living in L.A. I saw the ads for some of them, like that one place called "Beat It". I heard that's the best one. I never really got to though. I was broke and in a bad situation.
I'll tell you, I'm not going back to L.A. until I have some money and some fame. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Where? Um, you probably don't go to 80's clubs, I assume. Those are located in the Village. I forget where though. I actually just came from a club tonight. It was all the way in Alphabet City though. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

lilgish said: anon said: No CB's? CB's is not that great. The band scene in NY is not that great anymore. There was a time that you could gamble on CB's and be pleased that you did. Nothing worse than lame bands back to back. But that's not a CB"s thing. It's a small club thing. Brownies now has a DJ. Anyway, CB's may soon be history. They might be heading to Vegas. Too bad. I would say so. They played some Duran, Depeche, Bowie, etc. But I would imagine at Situation the DJ's would dig deeper into the New Romantic stuff. I would be in heaven if I heard Adam Ant, followed by Visage, followed by Spandau Ballet, followed by ABC, followed by.....well, you get the idea. I used to go the dance clubs in NYC on a regular basis. Most recently was Downtime on 30th street on Saturday nights for Albion every week. (I was friends with one of the DJs so I got in for free.) It was mostly goth naturally, but new wave and industrial were also heavily played. It's still going on today: http://albionnyc.com/
Back in the 90s, I was a regular at The Bank on Saturdays (called Ward 6--alternative, new wave, goth, industrial) and Limelight on Tuesdays (their industrial night called Communion). Nowadays I just got to various concert halls to see bands. The last one was Nellie Mckay at Irving Plaza on March 30th. The next one will be Tori at Hammerstein on April 8th. I haven't been to a dance club in about a year and I keep promising my friends that I'll start coming back out one day. Getting old sucks.

Hmmmm...I don't really do the club scene on the regular like i used to (I am 36 afterall ) But some that I remember as being "interesting" and or bumbin'. Were:
The Shelter (NYC Circa-1992)-Probably one of the best. Save The Robots(NYC Circa-1992)-Interesting. The Phoenix (Philly Circa-1990)-Kinda bumbin. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.
