I never said that Hunt was cute. Haven't really given that much thought but I guess he does exude cuteness. Shemar looks like a cheetah cub. I've said this many times. I have only heard a couple of Van Hunt's songs because my Amazon.com wizard kept recommending him to me based on my prior selections. He's ok, but I haven't felt compelled to buy his CD.
Anyways, I listen to John Legend all the time and have to say that I love his sound. I don't find it to be a "typical RnB-hip-hop hybrid", but I guess it's cool if ya feel that way. So my obvious choice is... John Legend Duh!

Here you go Kinda hard to listen to R when you don't know if he's singing about doing his woman or diddling your neice, no? NEXT! All I know is that Kelly is more soulful than these guys. To answer the question though. I’ve heard hundred of guys with demos that sound like Van Hunt, what’s the x-factor? Van Hunt is handsome…he may not be your type, but he definitely has a marketable look. It’s the whole "if Jill Scott looked like Alicia Keys scenario.” I don’t know what the fuck happened to D'Angelo, but Van Hunt could certainly corner his market. His album is reminiscent of P’s “for you” in its uncompromising singular vision; it’s doesn’t seem like a producer controlled him on this. I downloaded John Legend’s album yesterday after feeling left out on the conversation about ordinary people; he is the real deal and has all the chops to be a consistent artist in the business. John Legends “Get lifted” sounds way too over produced though, his brilliant voice only gets to breathe through Kayne’s "college dropout" like production in Ordinary People, So high and Refugee. Both of their albums were flawed and the reason is production. These albums should be recorded in analog (or with more analog like equipment) and preferably in one take; that’s the best way to capture the soul. (everything nowadays sounds like it was mixed and cut up in pro-tools.) John Legend is way ahead now, but so was Rick James at one point when compared to Prince. [Edited 4/2/05 21:17pm]

Good point about Rick & Princey too Isn't it funny though, the Alicia Keys/Jill Scott comparison I've never heard that comparison but it's not hard to imagine. In my eyes Jill is so much prettier than Alicia so it must just be a weight/ethnicity issue w/ folks which is REALLY telling JillIsGorgeousEdit. [Edited 4/2/05 21:54pm]

I like both artists, and I've started threads about both artists (although my John thread was premature because his CD wasn't out). I think both are very talented. Ultimately, I'd have to go with Van Hunt. As I said before, I think John Legend has "legend" potential, but this current CD suffers because of Kanye West's overbloated ego insisting he stamp John with his production style. If anything, it would seem that JOHN should be producing records for Kanye and not the other way around. Van Hunt's CD has a vibe that is undeniable. This is soul. Not "neo-soul", but SOUL. I haven't heard any artist out right now doing anything in the vein of what Van Hunt is doing (well, until Martin Luther dropped), whereas John's CD has a distinctly intentional "neo-soul" effort to it. I think John's voice is a bit stronger, but I like more of Van Hunt's songs. Lyrically and musically, I think Van is more "together" as an artist, whereas John's work seems a bit more contrived and market-oriented. To be fair, that may be due to Kanye's hand in the project. Both artists are talented, but Van Hunt is more of what I look for when I'm looking for soul/R&B records. John is more of what I get when I can't find artists like Van Hunt, but I want something new anyway.

I haven't heard Martin Luther's cd YET but I'm getting to it. He sounded great when he opened for Jill Scott. I'm looking forward to that one... maybe then it'll be a 3 way thread

...It's also kinda hard to tell based on one album, which is sometimes all you get in today's music industry...Prince had to grow musically to get from "For You" to "Sign O' the Times"...I'll bet a lot of people heard Prince's first album back in '78, and thought, "It's OK, but it's no big deal...He sure as hell ain't no Stevie Wonder..." ...and there are a lot of people who got a lot of buzz and a great reputation because of live shows , only to put out that first "official" album that fell a little short of people's expectations...(Dwele, Bilal, and Kindred are a few examples)... I have to agree. I however haven't seen Van Hunt live but I love his album. Can't get into Mr. Legend yet. Everyone I know has praised it to death but I'm still not feeling it. I liked Dwele and Bilal's albums but have never seen them live. Kindred however was the bomb at the Black Lily shows in PHilly but I never picked up their album. ... What song/s did he do for Cree? Thought Lenny produced the CD. I heard a few of her tracks. Remember liking them. He co-wrote Deliciously Down, Mean Sleep, and Sweet Pain.

BlaqueKnight's assessment sums it up for me. I've seen both live and Van Hunt moves me more. VH's band is ultra tight and all are talented musicians in their own right. Plus, any cat who covers Sam Cooke and Al Green and holds down and enhances his own material all one set is alright with me. The fact that he plays several instruments is also impressive. A true Soul Singer in an era of sometimes watered down Soul music. Legend is OK and Get Lifted had a few moments but I prefer Van Hunt overall.

Guess that definitely tips the scale that much farther in the Hunt direction. Actually I suspect that Hunt will have the longevity with me. Been listening to more of Legend since this post. He's got this Bobby Short quality in his voice that's scary as hell....like, what if that takes over! Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

SO well said. I saw John open for Alicia. His set was a'ight. He blew me away with a solo version (vocal and keys only) of Ordinary People. I haven't seen Van live yet.. but I adore his album. Best soul album since Bilal. Martin Luther's new album is wonderful as well, but it's got more rock on it which I don't enjoy as much as the r&b. Oh, speaking of Martin, if you want to be blown away, check this out. Goto MTV.com and look up artist Martin Luther. Check out his live clip of Daily Bread. Trust. [Edited 4/5/05 13:08pm]
