When a woman makes a transition from being classy or just a fairly wholesome songstress to an overtly sexualized 'diva' in barely-there outfits you can bet somewhere along the line she felt repressed or was indeed oppressed even if it was only in her mind. Then she achieves superstardom, self-confidence or some life-change experience like a divorce from spouse or record label and the clothes disappear and suddenly they're raunchy or oozing sexuality while trying to keep up with the TRL kids.

I hate forced sexiness and while 35 may be the new 25 I'm sort of bothered by mature women not only singing the same themes that 25 and under crowd sing about but using the same terminology. Maybe I'm a prude or have old fashion ideas but I feel like a woman in her mid to late 30s should be a little more sophisticated or at least have a bit more maturity in the lyrical content, especially if you're primarily a vocalist. Doesn't mean you can't have fun and occasionally drop it from time to time but I can get that from Ashanti, Britney and Christina (whichever one) if I choose. There's always someone to fill the need for a cute dance record and exposed abs or manipulated cleavage. I expect progression from the songstress that's been recording 10, 15 plus years, not regression but I understand that singers have to stay relevant. It's just MHO.

Aside from that, Please is very mediocre. I thought maybe it was a bonus track for Toni's greatest hits CD.

nod She needs better material and better producers. hmmm She could try having her husband producing some tracks for her perhaps.

Didn't he produce stuff on her last CD? Who's to say he isn't? I think she needs to take another stab at more uptempo (and really uptempo stuff) like "He Wasn't Man Enough...". That song was huge.

I just listened to it again and it's basically a lighter more boring "He Wasn't Man Enough" soundalike...and let's face it, that was five years ago. I mean, you don't have to follow trends, but don't repeat a sound from five years ago. If you want be vintage, he vintage, not following old trendy songs.

LOL - I love slutty/mature women - it's a wonderful combination. lol
If any female on this thread fits that description, holla @ me..But all jokes aside - i think most songstresses want to be sex symbols?...like all male singing acts want to be hunks.

Toni, Janet, and Mariah all love the same thing - Fame and attention

plus dwindling sales, dwindling respect from the public, and dwindling talent.

oh my lord...that fifth element dress she tried to pull off during the grammys.... that was horrible and didnt garner any of the attention j-lo's green napkin did...

that white one? i think? with no sides? it DID garner her attention, but i think she let it go to her head and decided that she had to dress like that all the time. and it backfired.

Thanks, this is exactly how I feel. In so many words, you've described my problem with Gwen's new album, Toni's new single, and Janet's past 10 years. Well said!
