my favorites are more recent, but I realize that's only because I've heard more of their work...I need to check out originals like Mary Lou Williams and Hazel Scott more closely...
Geri Allen Patrice Rushen Amina Claudine Meyers Tania Maria Rachel Z(Rachel Nicolazzo) ... [Edited 3/20/05 12:35pm] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

Tania Maria is still bad as hell,,,Outrageously Wild gets a heavy rotation treatment from me
'Trice is as bad too. She came to our Jr. High in a music class(Along with Brenda Russell), she was lecturing us about the bending tricks, rich chordes and the whole shebang. I was when she pre4med Fats Waller's "Handful Of Keys" for us. I honestly didn't know that she was THAT wild

I also saw Nina Simone perform at a small club in Chicago years ago. She was unbelievable live! Don't forget Roberta Flack..... Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

OK, so she may not be a sistah, but at least she's keeping the tradition alive. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Lillian "Lil" Harden Armstrong
Lil was not only one of the first important female jazz pianists, she also was a member of one of the first important jazz bands, King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. She went on to marry one of her bandmates, Louis Armstrong. [Edited 3/21/05 21:31pm] a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

She was the one who basicaly pushed him to get out of the King Oliver orchestra and make something of himself solo. She was a real TOUGH black woman

She's labeld as a "Smooth Jazz" pianist, and sounds more "New Agey", but she is my favorite....
