question about the 'ray' movie

hey

sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this...

can anyone tell me what's the meaning of the tree with those bottles hanging in them? Does it mean anything? Do people actually hang bottles in trees and why?

oh and btw, that guy that talks to ray about how unfair it is the audiences are devided, is that malcom X?
