I don't think it would be rap itself falling, just individual artists. I think it'll be quite a long time before we get through all these no name artists, and the big names, and get rid of rap, and other tyrannys to the music industry, like punk(IMHO), and everything else out there that prevents me from turning on the radio.

it's really funny to see someone referring to punk as a "tyranny to the music industry", when it was created as a protest to the music industry and everything middle-of-the-road and mainstream in popular culture. the tables do turn, eh?

still and all, i'm guessing that you're talking about all the 'mall-punk' invading the airwaves...all the 'X-TREEME' idiot jock 'punk' bands like blink 182 and sum 90210 or whatever. there's some really good punk that doesn't get noticed because it doesn't follow the formula...for example, the distillers should be really REALLY big. but they're not.

we're living in repressive times, and i'm not necessarily talking politically...though if you want to make a connection between politics and culture, be my guest. there's no fun or experimentation allowed right now. it's either paint with a broad brush or don't get your paintings hung. it sucks, and i can't wait for it to change. and i'm sure it will.

So where does that leave Stevie's song pastime paradise at?

I've never seen or heard this album until today. I like rap and thought his first album was good. But what I say today was horrific. The song. The whole imagery. It's like a bad spoof. It's just downright horrible.

Well, at the end of the video he does wake up in his car and realizes it was all just a dream. Maybe the director agrees with you! smile

If you think that video is bad, you should see the one for his other new song, "Disco Inferno"--not for the faint of heart.

Anything involving the words "50 Cent" and "disco" in the same sentence MUST be bad...

Teens (around my age, sadly enough to say sad ) want to be cool...they think they need to be in the "in" crowd...and that requires being a sheep and buying whatever is mostly mainstream...I bet at least 50% of his sales come from superficial teens...

Correct!

50% of 50 Cent's (no pun intended) & G-Unit's album sales are coming from white teens. wink

so is rap - as a mainstream genre - dying out? compare now with the early/mid '90s when there were a variety of rap artists and groups and 'scenes' and whatnot...it seems like now, there are just a few who are getting any kind of decent coverage at all, and the stakes for success in rap are getting more and more steep. either you're gangsta elvis like fiddy, or else your 15 minutes are more like 15 seconds. it's kinda depressing, really.

and if 50cent falls, he's really gonna FALL. he should spend a weekend with MC hammer, just for the sake of perspective.

Lil'Jon & 50 Cent are killing mainstream hip-hop as we know it.

But for this music fan, the underground hip-hop culture is THE REAL hip-hop culture, not the G-Unit family. cool

Purchasing music for most teens is no different than buying the right brand names. It's a status symbol. It's been this way for nearly a decade now.

The video has a lot of faults, but I don't think it looks cheap. On the contrary, it looks like a lot of money was spent on it.

That is the worst part. And if the cheesy metaphor wasn't obvious enough, he has to look at and point to his dick when he sings it. barf

I dunno, this was awful on another level, I rather see a Luke 'ass' video any day than 50 pretending to be hard. Granted, I've never seen Bet uncut.

'Uncut' mostly consists of videos that look a lot like "Candy Shop" except the budgets are smaller, the women are uglier and the guys don't rap as well.
