"cherish". Best version

What version u prefer? U have heard both versions right?

My Dad loves the 60's shit so he goes for the 4 tops. But Jodeci kill 'em on the verses. Production is tighter too.

Carla Thomas's version is the best. Her voice never sounded better than on this recording. She also turns the hell outta "Yesterday"; I believe this song is only available as a live recording. Another interesting version of Cherish is by the late great Dr. Nina Simone. I never said it was good...but it's interesting.

What lyrics were incorporated into her song?

Off the top of my head

"Cherish is the word I use to describe my love...". Something like that.

You gets no money or props for one liners. She didn't have to give any credit.

Really? That's a crazy rule. Not that the one line made or broke the song but that sucks. It was props in the fact that it was world famous Madonna doing a line from a classic song (although I never cared for that verison of "Cherish").

It's not a version, it's not a sample. They're entirely two different songs. I'd like to see the writers take someone to court for one line. That's just silly.

But they used a part of the song! So if someone uses your a line that manages to make the song and it's repeated over and over again, you don't have to give credit? Didn't Sting get credit from Dire Straits for "I Want my MTV..."? I don't think she should be sued, but she should have given the person or people a writing credit.

Dire Straits took the melody of Don't Stand So Close To Me, rather than a line from the song. Don't know if that makes a difference, just wanted to point that out.

Also, John Mayer used a line from Every Little Thing She Does is Magic in one of his songs "It's a big enough umbrella, but it's always me that ends up getting wet", and I don't think he credited it either. And sang it in that creepy child-rapist voice, but I digress...

Cherish
written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
-----
So tired of broken hearts and losing at this game
Before I start this dance
I take a chance in telling you
I want more than just romance
You are my destiny, I can't let go baby can't you see
Cupid please take your aim at me

Chorus:

Cherish the thought
Of always having you here by my side (oh baby I)
Cherish the joy
You keep bringing it into my life (I'm always singing it)
Cherish your strength
You got the power to make me feel good (and baby I)
Perish the thought
Of ever leaving, I never would

I was never satisfied with casual encounters
I can't hide my need for two hearts that bleed with burning love
That's the way it's got to be
Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet
So don't underestimate my point of view

(chorus)

Who? You! Can't get away I won't let you
Who? You! I could never forget to
Cherish is the word I use to remind me of your love

Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet
So don't underestimate my point of view

Who? You! Can't get away I won't let you
Who? You! I could never forget to
Cherish is the word I use to remind me of your love

(chorus)

Give me faith give me joy, my boy
I will always cherish you

See your icon...Prince took that pic too, with his own camera. He was the one who told her to wear the gold tooth. And even wrote "thief of hearts"
