2. Mary J. Blige 5. Teena Marie 6. Meshell Ndegeocello 7. TLC
8. Sade 9. Lauryn Hill 10. Janet Jackson 18. Toni Braxton 21. Aaliyah
22. En Vogue 26. Destiny's Child 29. Regina Belle

All of these are ranked too high. Me'Shell would be in the top 5 if black radio gave her a chance. Artistically, she belongs in any top-5 list but there haven't been too many R&B acts who have shown her as an influence since she stepped on the scene.

I guess not. Not a nod for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas?

All-time lists are such BS popularity contests anyway. They're complied by people whose knowledge is allegedly wide but not very deep. Hence you have the Hives finishing ahead of the Jimi Hendriz Experience, John Mayer ahead of Robert Johnson. See the same list from the same mag a few years later, contemporary artists in the top-10 are nowhere in the list.

TLC get their props, but DC3 sing circles around the girls and have a complete lack of style that is downright campy, and therefore fun. TLC were more tomboyish.

lol Ok, then. I'm clearly talking to a fan. All DC3 has done is steal everything they know from other acts, the majority of which they owe to TLC, SWV, En Vogue - everything that came before them. They have influenced nothing except as a launch pad for Beyonce's solo career.

That song "Soldier" is kinda stereotypical. It implies that black women aren't looking for balanced, intelligent black men.

Mary J fuckin' BLIGE above Tina Turner (and in the top 50 for that matter). And where's Billie Holliday? I know that Sonique certainly had a larger influence than her nod. That "Feels So Good" song will influence generations to come. Oh, and Ashitty, too.

This is one of the worst lists I've seen in a while. lol

I loved "Feels So Good" but there was never any follow up to it. Sonique maybe, maybe would be 75 on a list of women that changed dance music and that's iffy! The list is pretty crazy. Maybe the reason unquestionable legends like Billie Holliday aren't on there is because they are so beyond that list. If not, they are just crazy out of their minds!

Keep inn mind, there are 75 slots...it's the ranking that I think is absurd. I think Aaliyah deserves 21, though. She really brought R&B music to a lot of youngsters and most of her singles were great.

They really did screw up! Now this list sucks even more. Still, I think they was some method behind not putting soul legends like Ella, Billie and others on there...I think they that they were somehow thinking of living artists or still somewhat recent artists who might have passed (Alliyah). Billie and others are just beyond those silly lists...

wow. okay, that's enough. sure, Mary's as good as anything in the last 10-15 years in the genre, but..... seriously, #2 over Tina Turner? get real.

and Whitney Houston... well, she had a lovely voice, but she didn't change anything about r&b. in fact, it was a decade into her success that she actally became an r&b artist, and at that she was working with the same people everyone else before her was working with.

glad to see Meshell so high, though. although, it's probably in recognition of having ignited the "neo-soul" movement, which as a genre is rather unfortunate and mostly crap.

I would have much rather saw Martha Wash hello!!! she made it so all of these token skinny bitches can't get away with being puppets...thats definitely a change...perhaps CeCe Peniston,Ultra Nate, one of those 3 would have been my choice for a dance artist. still no Miki Howard,Jennifer Holiday,Vesta,Alyson Williams,Shirley Murdock,Lisa Stansfield Ok they may have not been groundbreaking artists but they are fare more better vocalists then alot of the ones mentioned.
