I just posted on PP4's thread about Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep. He mentioned Nubush City Limits.

My momma played Neil Diamond and the soundtrack of Once Upon A Time In The West awfully much. But then she would surprise the heck outa my by telling my brother to bring his Iron Maiden albums down and she would play those during the vacuumcleaning. Real loud.

But the most surprising song was Nutbush. It comes with a special memory. I discovered some tapes while cleaning out a cupboard and my momma started playing them. One was Ike & Tina Turner. I only ever heard Tina's solo stuff, which was big in the 80's.

Then Nutbush came on, my momma hollered and got up, hitched up her dress, Tina-style and started dancing like her too! It shocked the beejeezis outa me! She pulled me on my feet and we both danced.

Maaaan, that is a good memory! Nutbush rules!

So, what music did your parents play that surprised you?

my mom couldn't ever play anything that would surprise me. when i was a kid, she'd go from zappa to barry manilow to bootsy to billy ocean. there was always some kind of crazy shit playing on the stereo when i was a kid, which probably explains a lot.

my mother who forbid Madonna, Prince, and heavy metal... til i was about 13 has a very large collection of orginal Alice Cooper Vinyl

i remember when my mom went to see alice cooper in concert - i think she still has her t-shirt. it's from when he cut off all his hair and had some weird slicked-back look. he looked even more evil than usual. i think i was preoccupied with donna summer and 'xanadu' at the time, though.

I've had sort of the opposite happen with me.

My mom used to listen to lot of great stuff when I was growing up, but then in '82 became a born again Christian and stopped paying attention to contemporary music. When I was a teenager and getting into Prince and The Cure, she and the rest of my family really looked down on it. One day after school she even had all my cd's with parental advisory stickers gathered up and demanded that I destroy them. I had a fit and got my way and things changed after that.

Now most of the time, SHE's surprised about what she missed out on. Prince is now one of her favorites. And given her theatrical training and love of flamboyant performers, she cannot believe she missed out on Bowie who's now her favorite. So she gave me the love of music. But I gave her the music to love in recent years.

My mom never surprised me. Whats so surprising about Elvis Presley, Freddie Fender and Glenn Campbell.
Thank God I started to listen to rap music in 1979. I ended up being ok as an adult.

aww man... stuff never surprised me..wanna know whats freaky... when you're 4 or 5 years old and ya uncle hands u a copy of "are you experienced"

I still remember my mother vacuuming the house and humming the chorus to "One" by Metallica, and asking me what that song was that said "I wanna love you like an animal" (she meant Closer by Nine Inch Nails ). I think that all of the stuff I blasted from my room seeped into my parents' subconscious.

My parents used to have pretty modern taste in music until about 8 or 9 years ago, though. For 50-ish professionals, they still liked recent music until about 1998. My parents got me into Depeche Mode, U2, Madonna, Janet, Pearl Jam ( ), etc... Right before I went to college, I had to take my copies of Sixteen Stone and the Colour and the Shape out of my dad's car. Interstate Love Song is one of my dad's favorite songs ever. Granted, they never listened to Cradle of Filth, but I still think it's pretty cool that they like what they do.

I had to buy my mother Rattle and Hum on DVD because everytime I come home to visit, she asks me to bring it so she can watch Bullet the Blue Sky and Sunday Bloody Sunday on it.

but she did have her elvin biship period..that was odd to mee.

there is absolutely NOTHING that my mom can play that will surprise me...now.
but when i was younger it surprised the hell out of me that she was into people like outkast, busta rhymes and marilyn manson

Neither of my parents were heavy into music enough to buy records.

A Chuck Berry album
A Chubby Checker album
An album by whoever sings "It's My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To" (It's been so many years)
A Christmas album by Brenda Lee
A Christmas album by Gene Autry

I have the two Supremes albums in my collection now. The other albums were destroyed by my siblings when they were growing up.

In the 1970s, my mother listened to pop/rock and country. She listened to a little disco but not much.

In the 1980s, she listened to strictly country. I got her into a little funk (but not much) and my sisters got her into a little pop (but not much).

Now she listens to strictly blues.

My father (if that's what you want to call him) listened to classical and country. Who knows what he listens to now?

In 1979,I found one of my father's 8-track tapes.It was Millie Jackson's 'A Moment's Pleasure'.This was considered "adult music",but I listened to it anyway.I've been a big fan of Millie ever since.

Guess he was setting my Mom up for the kill.
