Opinions on Brian Wilson's Smile?

I've listened to it at this point obviously, but I don't know exactly what to think of it. What do people, hopefully people who at least have some appreciation for Brian Wilson, think of him re-recording and releasing Smile at this point in his careeer. Does anyone know how it sounds in comparison to how it would've sounded if he'd released the original '67 Beach Boys versions of those songs?

I haven't heard it, but c'mon, you must have some initial impressions of it!

Saw a documentry about the project (with lots a footage from the 60's) and him eventually finishing it and performing it life , recently , it was quite poignant
He finally seems to have lost his demons
Only heard him perform a few things from the album (which sounded great) , haven't heard the record unfortunately , but i think the man is a genius !

Anxiety

i'd like to hear the original recording. there's something a little too stagey about the version that was released last year. don't get me wrong - i really like it. i liked it so much i gave it out as a gift to a few people last christmas - but there's something about it that makes me feel like i'm listening to a piece that's a little bit watered-down or second-generation. maybe it's because i know there's a rawer-sounding original version and i'd really like to hear it.

that said, i had a blast hearing it for the first time. i heard a lot of different elements that i hear in some of my favorite bands of today - high llamas, saint etienne, etc. - and the sounds they pinched from wilson and 'smile'. i recommend it to anyone who likes a wide range of music - you'll hear your favorite bands in there somewhere.

Original was much better. Because that music needs to sound spontaneous and unpolished. The redo last year was just way too pretty and pristine to work for me.

Well my initial impression was that I liked it but that I was constantly thinking that it would sound much different, and probably better, if I was listening to the recordings Brian made when he was in his creative and vocal prime with his 60s production aesthetic and with Carl, Denis, Mike Love et al's vocals.
