i still can't believe they even put that shirt out...there was another cradle of filth t-shirt that i liked but i forgot what it looked like.

Yeah, I'm not down with that hardcore-anti-religious stuff.

Well, the shock value aspect didn't make me a fan. While I did enjoy it, it was the music itself that got me hooked.

As did it for me. Holy Wood was the first Manson album I bought, and I loved it. Coma Black was such an intoxicating song when I first heard it, which is why I still adore is so much.

I've heard about Slipknot's pits, but not about Hatebreed's (but I have heard of the band). I put Lamb Of God down because some friends of mine went to one of their shows and broke a couple bones, so they were the first thing on my mind... not to mention I had been playing New American Gospel earlier in the day.

It really depends on the crowd. Sometimes there are a bunch of juice heads in the pits who get off on punching and kicking people. That's not what moshing is supposed to be about. I always love to be in a good pit, but I don't get stupid in there.

But yeah, the Slipknot and Hatebreed pits are some of the craziest I've seen.

No no no, you have to tell them you're a 14 year old goth kid who knows nothing about good music. Otherwise their heads will explode.

I had always heard about Marilyn Manson but never payed much attention to him or his music(although i did hear and enjoy "This Is The New Shit"),but i saw a clip of his "Anti-Christ Superstar" show this weekend and this show was the most Satanic, Vile, Disturbing thing i have ever seen in my life. the songs reeked of drugs, sex, violence & devil worship and he looked just plain Evil(and not to mention high) while performing. the lyrics were druggy and groaned out, i could bearly understand a word he was saying, the stage was decorated with nazi war symbols and heretic marks. How is he so popular among people?? i was most disturbed after seeing that show. Marilyn Manson should be banned from ever perfroming again

First off, those weren't "heretic marks" or Nazi war symbols on the stage for that tour. The symbol shown is the "shock" symbol, commonly used on electrical equipment to warn of electrocution hazard. Yes, the stage design and show did echo facism, but that is the point of Anti-Christ Superstar. The whole album is about how our society creates its own monsters. The character in Anti-Christ Superstar is abused and tormented as a child, which leads him to become a hateful, power hungy facist oppressor. None of the album is about Satanism, in any way. Yes, the character is a self-proclaimed Anti-Christ, but he also proclaims himself to be anti-people. This is the point that the character is crossing a line, which eventually leads to his total destruction (as well as that of society's). The character's meglomania is self-destructive, but it also takes its tole on the world. There is a message here, about how we are raising our children, and how we are fascinated by the dark, evil and obscene.

This is a character that Manson is playing, the same as Bowie did on Ziggy Stardust, Waters did on Pink Floyd's The Wall and Prince did with his Camille persona on the Lovesexy tour. Manson also played the characters Omega and Mercury on the subsequent albums (which form a trilogy of sorts). Its all a story, with a message. Yes, its meant to be shocking, but if you only look at the surface you are missing much of the point.

As to your charge that he should be banned, THAT is a highly fascist idea. Free speech and expression are things that should always be preserved, EVEN IF you disagree with what someone is saying. Its an inalienable human right.

The only thing that Manson ever said that really made me cringe was when he screamed out "Fuck safe sex!" in the GG&G tour video, and the crowd cheered.

The point so many people miss about Manson is that he isn't just about shock value. He is presenting a "look at how much milage I can get off of shock value." facade.
It is very similar to the "look how much I can make off a pop song" Prince gave us with Cream.

Manson is exploring the absurdity of the rock star, the same way Prince and Bowie, and early Jagger did.

Musically he certainly has talent, just hasn't been my thing before or after Mechanical Animals.

I saw Manson back in the early 90's and his band truly sucked.
He had to resort to alot of shcok tactics to keep the audience entertained.

Manson tody is very good, actually. His song written skills since Anti-Christ are pretty spot on.

Yeah--he plays with disturbing imagry, but I'm wouldn't pay 50 bucks to go so the Oakridge boys.

You NAILED it! This is especially what Mechanical Animals is about, but the whole theme of the ridiculousness of celebrity runs throughout his work. His name alone echoes the asinine fact that a starlet and a serial killer can both acheive the same level of fame.

Cool that you grasp that, even though you're not a fan. His music isn't eveyone's cuppa tea, and he's really an aquired taste. Still, way too many people just want to dismiss him without really examining his work. I totally respect that you have done so.
