What made you want the tape, like which songs encourged you to buy it

and was your mother shocked to see Janet topless?????

my mom was a professonial aerobics insturctor when i was kid and she had lots of music around the house. i had been a janet fan since i was 5 and my mom bought Control. i got rhythm nation as a xmas gift in the 3rd grade. and it was the new janet album. my mom thought janet was much safer than madonna. and remember the tape just had janet's head. the topless bit appeared on rolling stone which came out after the album.

I'm sure it happened if you said it did. I don't really put much effort into remembering arguments I had on this site from around the time of Damita Jo's release, though (which is when everyone was bashing it).

If you ask me, the weakness is all the addtional producers on DJ. Kayne adds little ("I Want You" is a dissapointing single choice and that is his most notable track on there) and I like Dallas usually but he didn't add much more. "Island Life" is a huge let down from Cathy Dennis, a woman who has recorded great hits and wrote some great stuff for Kylie. However, the Babyface track was nice and the Euro producers gave the album a real shot in the arm. I don't think it's just Jimmy Jam and Terry.

I think the best song on 'Damita Jo' is "Just A Little While",which Jam and Lewis had nothing to do with.Perhaps Janet should have hired Dallas as the main producer, and went in a more pop/rock direction? His rock songs are great (remember TLC's "Unpretty" or Pink's "Just Like A Pill"?).That would have been more interesting than the run-of-the-mill R&B that dominates most of her album.

I like JALW also. The best song on Damita Jo IMO is "Sexhibition". That song is funky and has an old school vibe. I hope she works with Dallas Austin again.

I just listened to "All For YOu" again and I offically love it and prefer it over not only DJ but "janet." as well. It was pretty consistant and dispite only one stinker IMHO ("Trust A Try" is basically a more boring "You" and that song wasn't all that great...should have only done it once). That being said, there are a lot of really good songs on the album but ohter than the title track, nothing really amazing (maybe "Feels So Right"). DJ had a few awesome songs, again IMHO, like "All Nite", "SloLove", "Damita Jo" and "Like You Don't Love Me" but some baadd garbage as well ("Island LIfe", "Warmth", "My Baby"...cringe). Not to slam on DJ to hard, but I'm definately back in love with AFY again after criticizing it for a while.

I definitely don't think it's "garbage", but you have to admit that it's just Runaway for '04 (when Runaway was Escapade for '95). I do think that the album gets really good starting with Island Life - Like You Don't Love Me. This is a better stretch of songs than AFY had; although the interludes have gotten so preposterous, and now some of them are even attached to songs (that stupid shit at the end of R&B Junkie and I Want You is just wall ) Honestly, I've never heard Janet sound more drugged up than on this CD. She sounds like Laura Bush.

falloff

The only interlude-ish thing I like on the record is the, "Can we slow it down? I just wanna dance with my baby" at the end of R&B Junkie. I thought it was a nice transition to I Want You.

But yeah, there is a stretch there that indicates it could have been a good record, perhaps. If they had only cut about half of it (see my ideal tracklisting above).

Then again, you've said you don't like pop music much, so you probably tend to lump it all into the same category. lol Much as I lump many U2 songs into the "it all sounds the same" category. wink

Aha! The only difference is that I have every Janet CD (multiple copies of some), and it's not that they sound the same, it's just that she's repeating herself. And as is usually the case with a xerox, it's just a blurry imitation of the original. U2 also has a "sound" (although the "all sounds the same" is a huuuuuge load of horse shit doody lol), whereas Janet has made a career out of trying all sorts of different styles.

Well, I'm not going to get into another Madonna vs. Janet argument here, but I'd pick the opposite. Madonna's not so bad; besides, it's just another example of Janet copying Madonna wink . This time, Madonna was the first to steal that line from some other artist (can't remember her name now) and Janet-always-the-bridesmaid-never-the-bride Jackson then used it hug .

Anybody besides me who's hardly been able to stand Janet Jackson's music starting with All For You? mad

Control and Rhythm Nation 1814 are what I'd consider two of the greatest albums of the '80s, and janet. and The Velvet Rope were very good as well even if, in my personal opinion, they didn't quite stack up to their predecessors (I'll give them this, though-- they at least showcased an ability to remain fresher and more diverse than her brother).. but All For You and Damita Jo...

Both albums struck me as almost completely mindless and throwaway, and sex has become her principal muse. If she enjoys sex and wants to express herself through her music then hats off to her, but the content on these latest two albums strike me as rather premature and pathetic. She's pushing 40 now; I'm sure she has much more on her mind than her next orgasm.

But as with Michael (if he's acquitted, of course), I'm giving Ms. Jackson another chance. If she gets her mind out of her crotch and strays (even if only slightly) from heinous interludes then the future might look promising. smile

It's more like her producers are "stuck in a rut". Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis haven't done anything "fresh" since "Janet" and "The Velvet Rope". They haven't even been producing any other artist as of late. When was the last time they produced a artist besides Janet. rolleyes

Let's face it: The interludes are probably not going to go. That's ok, because I always burn a copy of her CD's (excluding RN) with the interludes deleted. If the music is good, I'll forgive her the indulgence of interludes.

I actually like All For You. It grew on me. There are some great tracks on there. The title track, Come On Get Up, Trust A Try, Feels So Right, Better Days, You Ain't Right, When We Oooo, Not so much Damita Jo, though. She needs to stop trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle that was Any Time, Any Place - no more shitty slow-jams with the thunderstorm sounds.disbelief

The PROBLEM is simple to FIX: don't make your albums 25 tracks long! Less is more when it comes to contemporary R&B records. Honestly, what if Damita Jo had just included:

-Strawberry Bounce
-Spending Time With You
-Island Life
-R&B Junkie
-I Want You
-All Nite (Don't Stop)
-Like You Don't Love Me
-Thinkin' Bout My Ex
-SloLove
-Just A Little While

Would have been a hell of a lot better, no?

We'll see. I still think The Velvet Rope is her best, and she probably won't top it.

Your right. Janet making another sex-themed R&B album will fail since every pop singer is doing the same thing.

Here's a review that I agree about the album.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Relax, it's just sex," Janet Jackson murmurs at the conclusion of "Sexhibition," the third song on her eighth album, Damita Jo. Those words were recorded long before Jackson wound up America with her breast-baring exploits at the halftime show at the 2004 Super Bowl, but they nevertheless play like an casual response to the hysteria that engulfed the nation following her infamous "wardrobe malfunction." But, really, they're there to head off any criticism that could be leveled at Damita Jo, yet another album that finds Janet exploring her sexuality, a voyage she's been on for about 11 years (Magellan and his crew circled the globe in a third that time, but hey, who's counting?). While sex indisputably fuels much great pop music, it isn't an inherently fascinating topic for pop music — as with anything, it all depends on the artist. Prince, of course, found an endless amount of ways to write intriguingly about sex, since it fired his imagination, a quality that has been missing on Janet's albums since 1993's janet.. With its preponderance of slow-tempo, sensual grooves, sexual imagery, occasional up-tempo jams, and endless spoken interludes, it provided the blueprint for every record she made since, from the heavy eroticism of 1997's The Velvet Rope to the bedroom sighs of 2001's All for You. The latter suggested that she was abandoning the explicitness of The Velvet Rope, but Damita Jo proves that she was merely flirting with modesty, since it's as explicit as pop music gets. Actually, it's the aural equivalent of hardcore pornography — it leaves nothing to the imagination and it's endlessly repetitive. Like a porn star, Janet adopts an alter ego built on her middle name ("There's another side that you will never know: Damita Jo"), provides detailed oral-sex manuals with "Warmth" and "Moist," nicknames her clitoris, and tosses around allusions to a variety of taboo sex acts; in this context, all the interview snippets scattered throughout the record — "I love curling up with a good book and relaxing by the ocean with my baby," "When you look at me, do you want me?" — recall nothing less than a Playboy or Penthouse centerfold confessing her turn-ons. Such doggedly literal lyrics lack any sensuality, and weigh Damita Jo down. If the music had its own sensuality or spark, it'd be easier to forgive or overlook Jackson's whispered vulgarities, but the album's slow grooves blend together, lacking rhythmic or melodic hooks. Jackson disappears into the productions, once again largely the responsibility of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, becoming part of the arrangement instead of standing in front of it. And while there are a couple of cuts that do cut through the slow-groove loops — on the slower side, "I Want You" has a verse that's memorable, while "Just a Little While" is a good dance tune — they pale next to the hits from All for You; that they stand out on Damita Jo says more about the album than the songs themselves. Ironically, for an album with so much sex on its mind, it's not a good make-out record because its grooves are cold and Janet's ceaseless dirty talk spoils whatever mood the music had struggled to create. Once, Ms. Jackson's sexual obsession was indeed sexy and erotic, but by this point, it's not just tired, it's embarrassing.

Janet Jackson & Jennifer Lopez need to kill their alter egos!!! uzi

I have to say, I think the worst moment of the record is switching from the tempo of "R&B Junkie" to "I Want You". omfg The interlude just means she is speaking over the drums on the "Junkie" fadeout.

RIP

It seriously isn't worth it. All the singles I've heard from Snoop have been getting better and better (I shockingly like his song with Justin, that punk ass traitor bitch!) but I don't think a Janet record would work. After all, how many times has recorded with them with no released results? On her last two questionable albums she didn't use their material? Hmmm....
