It is to go back, in other words, to the genius of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. . . Certainly, it emerges together with Abstract Expressionism, which is distinctly an American art form. . . I live not too far from Harvard, and I see Professor West around. He's an amazingly cool guy. Every time I see him he gets shouted out by random people on the street, and he's so gracious about it. If you say hello to him or pay him respect, he'll give you a smile and a wave as if you were good friends.
