i'm torn here. i didn't see ray but i did see hotel rwanda and i know don deserved to win. that said, everyone has been raving about jamie foxx's performance and, on a somewhat corny note, he's so gracious and sincere that i can't help but want him to get up on the stage! i would have loved to see don get some kind of props for such an important film, though. maybe some of you will disagree but i think its far more important that people learn about rwanda than ray charles...had he won the award for best actor, that film would have had a little bit more much needed press.

in the end, though, i'm very happy for jamie! i hope he chooses his next few films VERY carefully...

I'm happy for Jamie Foxx and all, but the Academy Awards will continue to remain irrelevant until they give Martin Scorsese a damn award! "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull", "Goodfellas", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Casino", "Gangs of New York" and now "The Aviator". I think we have to accept that he'll never win an Oscar.

James Dean? None.

Marilyn Monroe? None.

The most memorable performances this year weren't even nominated (Uma Thurman and Darryl Hannah). I think years from now people will be able to quote full dialogue from these characters. And who will ever forget Hannah's one-eyed-bitch Elle Driver?

So maybe it's cooler to remain in the club that hasn't been recognized. And though I didn't see "Million Dollar Baby" I must ask, are Clint Eastwood's movies that good?

I think Dean would have won had he lived. He needed more performances under his belt for them to consider him seriously.

Monroe should have been nominated for Some Like It Hot and Bus Stop. I don't consider either winning performances, though. Monroe was Monroe to a large extent, but she was good at it. Chaplin had The Tramp, and she had Sugar - same roles, different names. Wilder told her that this character she'd perfected was what she should focus on, but she had other ideas. I wonder if they would have culminated in anything had she lived. I certainly don't think she and her work habits would have survived the late 60's studio system breakdown.

And yes, I have to give credit where credit is due. Eastwood is a superior filmmaker who only seems to be improving with age.

We're out of the music category here, but in the end, I think Clint Eastwood's direction was worthy of the award he won. I love Scorsese's films, and I thought The Aviator was great. But my heart was with Million Dollar Baby this year. Eastwood did so much with a very small budget and helped mold three great performances. Scorsese's work, for me, didn't quite match that this year. His losses for Ragin Bull and Goodfellas are shameful.
