Skating Rink Jams From Back In The Day

Did anyone use to go rollerskating back in the day? Those were the days. We were too young to get into clubs so the skating rink was the place to be back in the day. I used to go skating probably beginning around 1978 until around 1986. The skating rinks were the first time I ever heard DJs mixing songs, which totally blew me away. At midnight, everyone would turn in their skates and dance on the floor until the rink closed at 1:00 a.m. Sometimes they would even have all night skates.

Anyway, what are some songs you remember from your old skating rink days?

Here's some of mine:

Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll - Vaughn Mason & Crew
Backstrokin' - Fatback
Burn Rubber - The Gap Band
Electricity - Midnight Star
Let It Whip - The Dazz Band
Let's Work - Prince
Wide Receiver - Michael Henderson
Take Your Time (Do It Right) - SOS Band
Computer Games - Yellow Magic Orchestra
Firecracker - Mass Production
Numbers - Kraftwerk
Pop Along Kid - Shalamar
Shake Your Pants - Cameo
And The Beat Goes On - The Whispers
We Got The Juice - Attitude
She Talks To Me With Her Body - The Barkays
Planet Rock - Soul Sonic Force
Play At Your Own Risk - Planet Patrol
Andy is a four letter word.

I still go rollerskating every Friday for the past 2 yrs. And those still make people skate their butts off. I know a few now that are popular at skate rinks.

Barracuda - I don't remember who does it but it's not by Heart.
Baby I'm scared of you - Womack & Womack
Salsoul/Love is the Message - MFSB
Get Up (Music) - Ralphie Rosario
Hot Music - Soho
Drop - Fatman Scoop
Rather Be With You - Bootsy Collins
I'll Go - Donell Jones
Love Like This Before - Faith Evans
No One - Maxwell
All of R. Kelly's Stepping Songs, especially Red Carpet (Pause, Flash)

I could go on....

When we went roller skating I'd say from about 1982 - 1991 they mainly played top 40. And there was no dancing afterwards sad But my favorite songs to skate to were;

When Doves Cry - By you know who cool
Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
Skeletons - Stevie Wonder
Shake Your Love - Debbie Gibson
Catch Me I'm Falling - ???
Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice (I must admit)
Knockin' Boots - Candy Man

Those were the days. When I became an "adult" I decided to take my little sister and cousin skating for two skating sessions (maybe 2 hours as session)like me and my friends used to do back in the day, but after the first session I was so tired and sore that, that was enough.

Ohh, you're taking me back!

When I was a kid the big rollerskating rink was called Spinoffs (now closed sad). They had a huge screen for showing videos (this was a big deal in the 80s) and an indoor waterfall with all these gaudy colored lights under the water.

I had my eighth birthday party there, in 1986. I had a Michael Jackson cake lol and since it was my birthday I got to request a video. I requested Raspberry Beret, and I can still remember skating around while it played at top volume, and being so happy.

Let's see, the other songs that take me back to the rollerskating rink:

"Oh Sheila" - Ready for the World
"Heartbeat" - Seduction
"Tell It To My Heart" - Taylor Dayne
"Prove Your Love" - Taylor Dayne
"Rapper's Delight" - Sugar Hill Gang
"Little Red Corvette" - Prince
"The Beautiful Ones" - Prince
"Thriller" - Michael Jackson
"Tricky" - RUN DMC

And of course, anytime it was someone's birthday, which seemed to be every time we were there, they'd play Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday."

These are all fun songs! I used to roller skate around the neighborhood a lot. I got a pair of blue skates (with one red and one white stripe) for my 10th birthday along with a copy of this album:
lol

That reminds me, has anyone seen anything about this movie? Looks like it could be fun

From the Web site
In the late ‘70s when roller skating was a way of life, X (Bow Wow) and his pals ruled supreme. But when the doors of their local skating rink close, it marks the end of an era and the beginning of another that sees the boys venture into foreign territory - uptown’s Sweetwater Roller Rink, complete with its over-the-top skaters and beautiful girls. Through his preparation for the showdown of the season - the Roller Jam skate off with the Sweetwater crew - X manages to find himself and also help his dad (Chi McBride) get back on track.

I ain't too thrilled about the cast, but the trailer looks good and the music it features is a lot of fun as well.

I'm glad Hotlegs mentioned "Cutie Pie" because that's the ultimate pearlin' jam.

We also need to add:

"Children's Story" - Slick Rick (how can anyone not bounce to that?)
"Doo Wa Ditty" - Zapp dancing jig

Let's not forget about the 'ol schoolers and backward skaters, who like to get in a line and do a lil' step....

"I Wanna be Your Man" - Roger Troutman
"Insatiable" - Prince

Back in the mid-90's, the rinks were jumpin' in Columbus. nod

Although, let's be real, if we were faced with that pizza nowadays, we probably couldn't be paid to eat it... lol

I used to go skating back in the early 80's also. I usually went at least 3 times a week, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. We also had all-nights at least every month and halfway through the night we'd take off our skates and be able to dance or run around on the rink. Skating was a great time and I met most of the close friends that I have to this day at the rink.
Before I started skating I only listened to rock or Top 40, but the more I went the more I got into the music I heard at the rink. You guys have already mentioned alot of my favorites so I won't repeat them, but I especially liked anything by Zapp or Soul Sonic Force. D.M.S.R. is also one of my favorite songs to skate to.
I have recently started skating again and I enjoy it. I'm not as good as I used to be but that was over 20 years ago and I don't take as many chances for fear of falling, but I must say I'm pretty good for an old lady lol
