I made the mistake of buying Gwen's cd the day after I bought the new U2 cd; I've only recently taken How to Dismantle out of my stereo, and have only given the Gwen CD a cursory listen or two. What I have heard, I can't say impressed me that much. Rich Girl/Hollaback Girl are both just godawful. No Doubt always did pop-ish music, but there's a long way down from Sunday Morning and Bathwater to 'This shit is B-A-N-A-N-A-S".

Kylie Minogue's CD didn't do much of anything for me either; honestly. Granted, I'm not into dance pop much, but I can appreciate a killer single here and there. Love at First Sight was a great tune, it had a great beat, and the chorus was great pop. The Body Language album just seemed to mine the 80's thing that she had already gotten right on LAFS.

shrug I still don't think that any of the 80's pop replications work half as well as the original songs from the 80's. I'll take Into The Groove any day over some rehash. I'd rather hear a Duran Duran original than a Killers xerox.

Anyway, to get back to my original point, I hope that Gwen gets back with No Doubt, because they really can make some great material together. I understand that she wanted to do a lightweight, fluffy album, and kudos to her for doing it. I just hope that she doesn't continue down this road.

If No Doubt reunites they need to go back to the Return To Saturn mould. The best songs they ever did were on that record. Of course they probably won't, considering it wasn't exactly a blockbuster.

But they were veering towards crap with Rock Steady. Gwen likes her repeated soundbites doesn't she? Hey baby hey baby hey baby hey baby hey baby na na na na na na na na na - that'll be their next big hit.

That's 'cause it's unselfconsciously carefree and fun. There's no pretension in it, and they're just good pop songs. They don't make those much anymore. biggrin

biggrin Well, Hey Baby got really old fast. The rest of that CD isn't so bad, though. Hella Good might be the best pop song they ever did (although Ex-Girlfriend and Bathwater might give it a run for its money) and the rest of the album had a few winners too. Waiting Room was a better Prince song than So Far, So Pleased, IMO.

I get that Gwen's trying to be different now, but it just doesn't fit in now. In 1985, she may have gotten away with bringing those GODDAMN Harijuku Girls with her everywhere she went, but not in 2005. Her image right now reminds me a lot of Cyndi Lauper, whereas before she always seemed closer to Madonna. As much as I like Cyndi, the public really got tired of her antics quickly. I'm thinking that this might just do the same for Gwen.

But that's who Cyndi really was - it wasn't an act. She's gotten older but she's still just a kooky girl from the Bronx. That's what I've always loved about her, I guess - she seemed genuine.

I never thought it was a great album to begin with. Of course everyone on this site was overblowing the album and i bought it to be sadly disappointed.

The songwriting is very weak.
I see stronger lyrics in Hilary Duff's music and that is sad.

I've never blown an album, much less overblown one. And I'm wondering if you read the same conversations about LAMB as I did. Any thread about it has resulted in a conversation along the lines of "It's good/No, it's bad."

The true weak point on the album is the lyrical content. It's pretty shallow, with too much emphasis on looking good and having lots of dough. On the whole though, I do think it's a good album. It's just not a very memorable set. Like VC said, it doesn't have much staying power - I've not listened to it since the first few weeks I had it and none of the material on the album is truly original. She wears her influences on her sleeve.

CynicKill said:

But the album is doing very well. It's currently number 15 on the Top 200.

It got a boost from the Grammys. It was at 25 before that and was lingering in the middle of the chart. For all the hype the album's gotten from the press and for as well known as Gwen is, the album should be performing better than it is.

The Harijuku thing I actually like. It's very Madonna, not that Madonna would be SOOO heavy-handed with it (Madonna's one misstep to me was the cowgirl chic thing she did for "Music" but I digress). At least she has an idea. It might have been a good idea to give her girls a different name instead of using Harijuku.

Yeah I agree, I don't think Cyndi was being fake. By True Colors, people were already getting tired of the whole deal. I think the same thing happened to Pink. Her second CD (which I'm not even going to try to spell the title) was a huge hit, she had a slightly crazy image, and she had some good tunes. The follow-up CD was a better album (IMO), but her image had already soured, and people were moving on to the next thing. Gwen already had a fun image, but she also had an illusion of depth behind her. If she keeps this LAMB shit up, I fear that the public will just group her along with the Britneys of the world and get sick of her.

Madonna never would have done that, I guarantee it. She changes her image, she doesn't accessorize it like Gwen.

Cyndi still has a strong career, though - and she's a big live draw. Her voice is stronger than ever. I doubt someone like her would last more than 3 months in today's musical climate. I still think Gwen and Christina have been copying Cyndi's early-80's look to a certain extent. Gwen's voice sounded "off" to me on LAMB - compare it with her vocals on Return Of Saturn. Not really up to par.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cyndi Lauper in concert, but not if I had to see her open for Cher ill. I've always loved the live video for Money Changes Everything, that's how I always imagined a Cyndi concert would be. A little wacky, but pretty much your average rock show. No big costume changes, no stupid sets, no 28 dancers doing the same stupid move. I think if that's what her shows are like, I'd love to catch one.

That song is amazing. Cyndi has covered several songs in a superior way, and that's one of them. The other is I Drove All Night. I still don't think anyone's surpassed her version.

No shit! That would've been great! Does she still rock it, or does she do it acoustically? I saw her on TV a few years ago playing some sort of harp or something, she was doing a set of her old stuff and it was all really downtempo. I was afraid that maybe that's how she performs now.

Celine Dion's kills Cyndi's version. wink
I love I Drove All Night. Her voice is so strong on it, particularly toward the end when she hits that high note. I have fond memories of that song, because around the time that song was popular, I got to talk to her on the phone for a quick minute or two. smile It made me happy.
