...And though I didn't see "Million Dollar Baby" I must ask, are Clint Eastwood's movies that good?

When you say "...Eastwood movies" what do you mean?
Ones he's acted in, Produced, directed?

Bird, Straight no Chaser, Million Dollar Baby..all good.
Mystic River was even good in that it was disturbingly well done.
It definitely took you there. Even if it was a place you would rather not have gone.

Clints film deserved to win. Though i havn't seen "sideways" yet to be honest.

I would of bene mighty pissed if "ray" woulda won.

Spike Lee shoulda got one for "do the right thing". Was that nominated 4 best picture? Ironically I think it lost out to the old fashioned "driving miss daisy".

Lucia Rijker, a dutch boxing-champ.....she was picked for her skills and did most of the training of Hillary Swank. I don't believe she was picked because she was black, but because she is the best out there to do the job.

well, I guess you're not going to find out then..... I'll tell you how The Aviator ends: DiCrappio overacting a nutcase with a fake beard, repeating himself endlessly.....there, now you don't have to sit through 3 hours of what is an horrid movie.....

The nominated movies and actors were fantastic this year. I was hoping either Don or Jamie would win best actor. Both were excellent in their roles. Hotel Rwanda was a better movie than Ray, but Jamie was so perfect as Ray so I guess he deserved it over Don.

I was very happy to see Million Dollar Baby win. Great movie and Hilary was awesome as usual.

i'm torn here. i didn't see ray but i did see hotel rwanda and i know don deserved to win. that said, everyone has been raving about jamie foxx's performance and, on a somewhat corny note, he's so gracious and sincere that i can't help but want him to get up on the stage! i would have loved to see don get some kind of props for such an important film, though. maybe some of you will disagree but i think its far more important that people learn about rwanda than ray charles...had he won the award for best actor, that film would have had a little bit more much needed press.

in the end, though, i'm very happy for jamie! i hope he chooses his next few films VERY carefully...

I am indeed happy Jamie AND Morgan won. And Chris Rock did an excellent job hosting. I kinda would have liked to have seen Don Chedale win. He was excellent.

I agree.
'That said Sassy, I seriously advise that you peep out Ray.
Forget about the hype. Just watch the flick for what it is. Jamie's performance is sick.

I agree with that point. To me, Don Cheadle's performance was a more well-rounded piece of acting. I was impressed with pieces of Foxx's turn, but on the whole I just liked him. Cheadle was simply brilliant, and I think he'll have another shot at Oscar some other time.

Impressions are easier to do than characteriziations. Hence I would agree. wink

When I think about it, that is why I didn't embrace his performance in the same way that others did. Again, I thought he was good, but I just wasn't blown away. In some ways, it seemed like an impersonation. There was too much focus on getting his mannerisms down. On the other hand, the staged numbers were brilliant, but then I thought that some of the power of those scenes came from the music itself (which was Ray and not Jamie). Though it was a mixed bag for me, he's been so gracious throughout that it's not been bad for me to watch.

Ultimately, I think Cheadle's downfall is that his was a little seen film. Had it garnered more box office and had its heavy subject matter not kept people away from it, it might have changed things. It's over and done with, so speculation isn't worth a bit. I'll have to make do with the fact that I think he was brilliant. smile

Sorry I don't buy it. I don't care how she was cast, best boxer or whatever. I'm talking about Formulaic Hollywood representation...it's a theme that comes up from the beginning. It's not like her character had any depth whatsoever. I'm talking about the script, not reality.

I tried really hard not to comment on this because it doesn't deserve any attention, but it was SO unnecessary and SO IGNORANT that I just had to acknowledge that fact! She is a lovely child and for meltwithu to say this proves that some people are in serious need of a lot more than braces!

Hey there--Actually I rarely post at all and you're right, it wasn't that deep and it WAS off color! My problem was that you attacked an 11 year old kid and you could have said pretty much anything else without going there. Having said that, I'll take your suggestion and relax, but with an amaretto sour! comfort

It's a fake tattoo for a film he's currently making. At least, that's what he said on a couple of shows when he was asked.

So you're just gonna sit this one out with an amaretto sour? Too bad. You were right. It wasn't funny. OK, if the kid really needed braces or something it might have been funny in a bad way...but her teeth were fine. They're just growing in.
