is that haRD funk mAN from the commodores realy the same soft ballads guy lionel richie?

i was listening to commodores records.
they were realy funky.when everybody else left for the disco they were still
funking as hard as they wanted.

lionel richie was the funk engine for the commodores.

his funky clavinet lines ,raw funky singing and fubky horns he played,

realy brought to the funky sound of commodores.
so my question is :
how can it be the same guy ,
singing funky situation and dancing on seeling?

something seriosly bad happend in lionel head to be so boring after the commodores.
if he stayed true to his funky hear, today he would be mentioned in the same line as sly stone, jimi hendrix, george clinton.

Yeah, but how many other people have "sold out" or last touch or otherwise declined outside of the groups that gave them creative foils and competitive motivation.....ok so Paul McCartney is the only example I can think of off the top of my head but it must happen a lot because I said so lol

Once an artist sees those dollars signs from the pop world, you can forget about getting any more funk or even great slow jams out of them. Nine times out of ten, once they cross over, they will sell out and water that shit down for mass pop appeal every time.

People may talk about and down Rick James for many things, but I have the greatest admiration for him for having a pop hit like "Super Freak" and coming back hard, strong, and funky on the very next album for the original true fans. You can't say that about many artists that had a crossover hit.

I love the quote that George Clinton said about Lionel in the early 1980s, "He done crossed over so far he can't get black".
Andy is a four letter word.

I like Lionel's first two solo albums---the self-titled one from 1982 and his landmark 1983 album'Can't Slow Down'.There are some solid jams on those albums.Yes,most of the songs are "pop" and not nearly as funky as his Commodores days, but it's hard to ignore brilliant songs like "You Are","Tell Me","You Mean More To Me","Round and Round","Stuck On You" (arguably his finest solo single),"Running With The Night" and the extremely soulful "Love Will Find A Way".Hell, even "All Night Long (All Night)" is alot of fun.

But disaster struck on his third solo album 'Dancing On The Ceiling'.This time,he had crossed over a little too far.The title track is not only his worst song,it's one of the worst songs of the 80s! Most of his subsequent albums aren't much better....bland,syrupy pop with trite lyrics. Is anyone surprised that he is now talking about a reunion with the Commodores?

Yeah, who knows if it will really happen? They've been "planning" a reunion since the mid-90s.But if it does happen, that could be interesting.Could you imagine a tour where they would play stuff like "Slippery When Wet","Just To Be Close To You","Machine Gun","Easy" and "Sweet Love"? Lawd have mercy!

The Commoderes To Begin Recording First Album In 12 years

The Commodores are about to begin recording their first new album in over
12 years. Trumpeter William King joked to the Palm Springs Desert Sun
that, "We're happy about (the material), we're in the midst of arguing
with each other." King still performs with the Commodores as a trio with
Walter "Clyde" Orange and J.D. Nicholas.
He says that he would love for the group's original lead singer Lionel
Richie, who left in 1982, to rejoin the band while all the original
members are still alive and healthy, explaining that, "We've talked about
(it), but the tough part would be to put everything back together... It
would be a simple process for us, because we just have to walk on stage.
We're all ready to do it. Richie has held out and we can't do it without
him, and he can't do it without us."
Lionel Richie spoke with LAUNCH and say he thinks the timing may be right
to reunite with the band: "That is very much a reality. It's just a matter
of getting the original guys back together, but I think that these guys
may be ready for that type of reunion. We'll see."
King says he and Richie have stayed close friend throughout the years: "My
relationship with him is good because we don't live too far from each
other... We run into each other at stop signs. I'll be at the stop sign,
and then he'll pull up to the side and lower his window. We'll laugh and
then he'll take off."
The Commodores scored 17 Top 40 hits including the Top Ten singles "Easy,"
"Brick House," and "Sail On," and the Number One singles "Still" and
"Three Times A Lady." After Richie's departure they scored a Top Five hit
in 1985 with "Nightshift," which paid tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie
Wilson.

speaking of lionel richie...

On Monday, 44 theaters across the country will air Usher's 20-minute mini-movie, "Rhythm City Volume 1: Caught Up." Fans who come out for the flick will also get to see a making-of-the-movie segment as well as a live interview with Usher conducted by Lionel Richie. Meanwhile, the movie, which Usher co-directed with Little X, will be released on DVD on March 28. Several Usher videos will also be included.

If this happens,I wonder what will happen to J.D. Nicholas? He was brought in to replace Lionel, and he's been a loyal member ever since. He's done a great job.But if Lionel reunites with the other original members, will they give poor J.D. his walking papers?

This would be my ideal setlist...

"Let's Get Started" (they always used this song as an opener in the late 70s)
"Machine Gun"
"Slippery When Wet"
"Funky Situation"
"Sweet Love"
"Fancy Dancer/Too Hot Ta Trot"
"Lady (You Bring Me Up)"
"This Is Your Life"
"Easy"
"I Feel Sanctified"
"Cebu"
"Sail On"
"Just To Be Close To You"
"Flying High"

ENCORE---
"Still"
"Brick House"
"Nightshift"

headbang bring it on,bring it on! I didn't get to see them in concert during their heyday, but I'll settle for a reunion.

Speaking of old school Commdores...how many of you bought that Commdores album in 1977? If you bought it, you got a promo wall poster inside the album.
My older sister bought the album and gave me the poster. I put it on my wall. If you're wondering how the poster looks.....well it is the same one that Tony Manero (John Travolta) had on his bedroom wall in the classic 70s movie Saturday Night Fever biggrin

Dancing On The Ceiling is just a MESS!!! Video just made it worser. I think the reason why the single charted so high in 1986, was because people were in high anticipation of a new Lionel Richie record coming off the great album Can't Slow Down.
