From Sextonseven's suggestion, I'm including The Cure in the org tradition of the fan questionnaire.

With a great new album, wonderful box set, insanely generous remasters, praise and recognition from critics and peers and a whole crop of new bands namedropping the band, I can't think of a better time for The Cure and Cure fans. Love 'em. Best band ever.

So, hit us with some of your firsts, favorites and memories...

1. What was the first Cure album you purchased or were given, and what was the year?

2. What was the first video you remember seeing, and which one is your favorite to date?

3. Have you ever seen The Cure in concert? Which tour(s) and how many times?

4. Favorite album and why?

5. Least fave and why?

6. Favorite song? Any specific memories/stories you have about it?

7. Any Cure song you cannot stand? How come?

8. Favorite duet or collabo?

9. Who would you like to see Robert Smith do a duet with?

10. Favorite era? This can be based on decade, band lineup, sound, anything really.

11. What artist(s) do you see a major Cure influence on?

12. Favorite television moment?

13. Favorite b-side or non-album track?

14. First single you purchased or were given?

15. Last single you purchased or were given?

16. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters?

17. Will you be buying the next one?

18. Would you like to see a Robert Smith solo album?

19. Did you ever go through a goth phase where you dressed and wore your hair and makeup like Robert Smith? mr.green

1. What was the first Cure album you purchased or were given, and what was the year? Galore. I think it was 2000.

2. What was the first video you remember seeing, and which one is your favorite to date? Lovesong to both

3. Have you ever seen The Cure in concert? Which tour(s) and how many times? Nope, never

4. Favorite album and why? The Head on the Door. It's diverse, it's catchy, it's short. It sounds like the mid-80's. There isn't one bad song on it. It has Screw, Six Different Ways, Push, and Close to Me

5. Least fave and why? Three Imaginary Boys. It sounds underdeveloped (understandably), and I think that the lyrics are a big crappy.

6. Favorite song? Any specific memories/stories you have about it? Pictures of You. It reminds me of being young and naive. Convinced I was in love. High school. 'Nuff said smile

7. Any Cure song you cannot stand? How come? Not really heard enough Cure yet to comment, but I don't really like Fascination Street at all. Not sure why, though.

8. Favorite duet or collabo? Haven't gotten that far yet

9. Who would you like to see Robert Smith do a duet with? Bowie would be pretty cool, as would Trent.

10. Favorite era? This can be based on decade, band lineup, sound, anything really. Probably Head on the Door.

11. What artist(s) do you see a major Cure influence on? Interpol, Killers. The first time I heard Push, I thought I was listening to a song by one of those two.

12. Favorite television moment? Haven't gotten that far yet

13. Favorite b-side or non-album track? See the answer to 8 and 12 wink

14. First single you purchased or were given? Don't have any

15. Last single you purchased or were given? Same as 14

16. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters? Nope, but I'm working on it. I know I'm going to be stoned for this, but the last one I bought was the Three Imaginary Boys remaster. I sold it back the next day. shrug I put it on my Ipod, but I don't think I'll be listening to it much more. I do plan on buying the Faith and Pornography remasters when they're released, though.

17. Will you be buying the next one? Probably, yeah

18. Would you like to see a Robert Smith solo album? Let me get through the Cure catalog, first lol

19. Did you ever go through a goth phase where you dressed and wore your hair and makeup like Robert Smith? Nope, can't say that I have

20. Is The Cure your overall favorite artist? If not, who is? Are they your favorite band? Nope, U2 is my favorite band. The Cure are climbing up the list, though.

21. What is your best memory tied to The Cure? Probably drinking one New Year's Eve with my buddies and screaming the words to Friday I'm In Love and Just Like Heaven.

These are the Cure albums I own:

Head on the Door
Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
Disintegration
Mixed Up
Galore
The Cure

Where should I go from here? Truthfully, I've only really gotten familiar with Head on the Door and Galore. I know the hits from Kiss Me... and Disintegration, but never really got into those albums proper. If you don't mind, could you recommend me some songs from those CDs so I can get into them, too? cool

1. What was the first Cure album you purchased or were given, and what was the year?

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me on cassette - 1988?

2. What was the first video you remember seeing, and which one is your favorite to date?

First was Just Like Heaven, and it remains my favorite.

3. Have you ever seen The Cure in concert? Which tour(s) and how many times?

Yes, twice. The Capitol Center in Landover, MD on the Wish Tour, and Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD on the Dream Tour for Bloodflowers.

4. Favorite album and why?

Disintegration. It's the strongest from start to finish, and i have many important memories that revolve around this album.

5. Least fave and why?

Three Imaginary Boys, because they had not yet developed beyond a fairly interesting punk-pop band. I still enjoy it, though.

6. Favorite song? Any specific memories/stories you have about it?

Fascination Street. I remember recording it off the radio, the show "future hits", and playing it over and over and over again. I used to call local radio stations and request it all the time.

7. Any Cure song you cannot stand? How come?

umm... probably The Promise or Watching Me Fall... just too damn long. Or maybe Just Say Yes.

8. Favorite duet or collabo?

I dig the song w/ Blink 182.

9. Who would you like to see Robert Smith do a duet with?

Nobody in particular, I don't think his voice works well w/ other singers.

10. Favorite era? This can be based on decade, band lineup, sound, anything really.

Kiss Me/Disintegration/Wish

11. What artist(s) do you see a major Cure influence on?

A Perfect Circle, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Smashing Pumpkins... too many to mention.

12. Favorite television moment?

don't really recall any in particular.

13. Favorite b-side or non-album track?

A Chain of Flowers.

14. First single you purchased or were given?

I think it was an import cassette single of Catch

15. Last single you purchased or were given?

alt.end

16. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters?

Yes. And Yes, I will be getting all the remasters.

17. Will you be buying the next one?

Of course.

18. Would you like to see a Robert Smith solo album?

I would certainly buy it, but I would prefer he record w/ the cure.

19. Did you ever go through a goth phase where you dressed and wore your hair and makeup like Robert Smith?

No.

20. Is The Cure your overall favorite artist? If not, who is? Are they your favorite band?

Not favorite artist, but favorite band - yes.

21. What is your best memory tied to The Cure?

Swaying in the crowd on The Dream Tour when Sinking came on....

I used to listen to Disintegration w/ all the lights out in my room all the way through in preparation for exams in high school and college....

The discovery phase of the Cure. After I got Kiss Me, i went back through and bought all their old albums, it was like a new chapter of music opening in front of me...

There are many others.

I would just like to mention one thing not asked - Cure's most UNDERRATED album - WILD MOOD SWINGS, no question.

Well, with the Three Imaginary Boys thing, I can somewhat understand. It's a bit rawer and punkier than most of The Cure's work. Plus, the US release of that album, "Boys Don't Cry" has a superior track selection and order. If you focus on the singles, Boys Don't Cry, Jumping Someone Else's Train, Killing An Arab and 10:15 Saturday Night and some of the better album tracks like Grinding Halt, Fire In Cairo, Accuracy and the title track, you might start to see its appeal.

As far as Kiss Me and Disintegration, I don't really think there's a bad song on them. But some of the fan favorites other than the singles would be...

From Kiss Me: The Kiss, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, Torture, How Beautiful You Are, Like Cockatoos

From Disintegration: Plainsong, Closedown, Disintegration, Untitled

Their catelogue is wildly varied like Prince's so it takes some getting used to the different eras. If you like the sketch-like minimalist stuff, I'd go with Seventeen Seconds and Faith. If you like their deranged and dark stuff, I'd go with Pornography and The Top. If you like their pop material, Head on the Door and Japanese Whispers are about as mainstream as you'll get. Wish is the more rocking cousin to Disintegration and Bloodflowers is The Cure at its most dreamy and plaintive. And their box set of b-sides is as solid and moving disc per disc as any of their proper albums. You really can't go wrong with any of it.

ok, i'll bite...

1. What was the first Cure album you purchased or were given, and what was the year?

i'm fairly certain it was around 1986, and it was 'staring at the sea: the singles'...or was that 'standing on a beach'? i know, one's the CD and one's the videos, but i always confuse the two because i'm a little bit simple. anyway. i had the tape, with all the b-sides on the other side of the tape. nod

2. What was the first video you remember seeing, and which one is your favorite to date?

probably 'boys don't cry' or 'in between days' - whatever would get shown on 'night flight' back in the day.

3. Have you ever seen The Cure in concert? Which tour(s) and how many times?

twice. once was the disintegration tour. i can't remember the other time. wink

4. Favorite album and why?

probably disintegration, because every time i put it on i know exactly where the music's gonna go and exactly where it's gonna take me. plus, there's nothing like putting this CD on during a summer rainstorm, preferably at night.

5. Least fave and why?

oh lord, probably that crap they were doing in the early-to-mid '90s. "friday i'm in pain" or whatever that stuff was. ill

6. Favorite song? Any specific memories/stories you have about it?

right now, probably 'in between days', because my sweetie and i slow-danced to it at the roxy in NYC last year on labor day weekend.

7. Any Cure song you cannot stand? How come?

'friday i'm in stirrups' barf

8. Favorite duet or collabo?

gotta love 'the glove' and 'hyaena'. nod

9. Who would you like to see Robert Smith do a duet with?

bjork and/or beyonce lol

10. Favorite era? This can be based on decade, band lineup, sound, anything really.

the mid-'80s, when he had big hair and big sweaters and dorky tennis shoes and all the music and videos were funky and whimsical and fun, and it all seemed so fresh and inviting.

11. What artist(s) do you see a major Cure influence on?

just about any alterna-hot band that's getting written up these days.

12. Favorite television moment?

when john lydon was asked on '120 minutes' what he thought of the cure, and lydon simply blew a booger out of his nose. lol

13. Favorite b-side or non-album track?

throw your foot, oh ho hey hey ha ha ha ha ha hey hey hey ha ha oh ho hoo hoo hoo

14. First single you purchased or were given?

single? mmmm, probably a cassingle for 'why can't i be you', which i think i still have floating around somedamnwhere.

15. Last single you purchased or were given?

lordy. probably 'never enough'.

16. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters?

no. the last one i got was the 'three imaginary boys' reissue. i'm really happy my cure collection is so spotty, because with these remasters, i'll be hearing several of their old albums for the first time.

17. Will you be buying the next one?

yeah, more than likely.

18. Would you like to see a Robert Smith solo album?

what would the difference be? lol

19. Did you ever go through a goth phase where you dressed and wore your hair and makeup like Robert Smith? mr.green

HELL yes! though actually, i went through more of a daniel ash phase, because i liked his dinosaur hair more than i liked robert smith's pineapple hair. my college roommate went through a total robert smith clone phase, complete with oversized suit jackets and, yes, smeared lipstick and eyeliner. what made it even wackier was that he was a skateboarder, so there'd be this robert smith drag queen skateboarding across campus all the time, and he was my roommate...of course, i didn't look much more normal.

20. Is The Cure your overall favorite artist? If not, who is? Are they your favorite band?

no. my favorite band is puddle of mudd.

21. What is your best memory tied to The Cure?

my most recent best memory is a certain concert i attended last summer, but i also equate the cure with the few good memories i have of going to high school in speedway, indiana - my best buddy in high school was a cure FANATIC, and more or less introduced me to their music...i have great memories of digging through all his vinyl and looking at all his cure 12" singles and imports, and rooting through all his old issues of 'smash hits' and NME. all that was definitely a big part of my musical education. nod

1. What was the first Cure album you purchased or were given, and what was the year? Standing on a Beach - vinyl version, 1987

2. What was the first video you remember seeing, and which one is your favorite to date? Difficult to remember, but I'd expect it was Close To Me or In Between Days. My favourite would probably be In Between Days.

3. Have you ever seen The Cure in concert? Which tour(s) and how many times? Yes, once on the Wish tour. Rather poor show, actually - fuzzy, indistinct sound and the audience seemed anaesthetized.

4. Favorite album and why? Song for song, that would be Boys Don't Cry. I really love the Buzzcocks-style power-punk-pop feel of it, and I don't think he ever wrote a stronger batch of songs.

5. Least fave and why? The Top - though I can only stomach Pornography when I'm in the mood for it.

6. Favorite song? Any specific memories/stories you have about it? Fire in Cairo.

7. Any Cure song you cannot stand? How come? High - I always thought it was an aimless, messy song.

8. Favorite duet or collabo? There's a song on the Blue Sunshine album that I really love, but I'll be damned if I can remember the title.

9. Who would you like to see Robert Smith do a duet with? Mark E. Smith

10. Favorite era? This can be based on decade, band lineup, sound, anything really. Early eighties - Faith, Seventeen Seconds

11. What artist(s) do you see a major Cure influence on? Placebo, for sure - any of those new wave revivalist types.

12. Favorite television moment? There was a good interview with Robert when he shaved his head during the HOTD era on Cdn television (The New Music, I think???) - he looked completely insane.

13. Favorite b-side or non-album track? n/a

14. First single you purchased or were given? I don't buy singles - though I do have a 45 single of Dinosaur Jr's cover of Just Like Heaven.

15. Last single you purchased or were given? n/a

16. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters? Don't own all of them. The last one I bought was Wild Mood Swings, and I sold it fairly quickly. I don't expect I'll ever buy another Cure album, unless I stumble across an album I might like to replace at an extremely reasonable price.

17. Will you be buying the next one? No

18. Would you like to see a Robert Smith solo album? He's been threatening to do this for years, right? I don't really see the point - he's the Cure, the band is pretty much whatever he decides it's going to be.

19. Did you ever go through a goth phase where you dressed and wore your hair and makeup like Robert Smith? I went through a mild goth phase when I was 20 or so, but I never wore makeup or had the wild hair.

20. Is The Cure your overall favorite artist? If not, who is? Are they your favorite band? No. I think they're a very nice but limited band who've cobbled together a small handful of fairly classic pop songs. My favourite band is the Fall.

21. What is your best memory tied to The Cure? Being extremely altered on mushrooms with about five other guys playing Close To Me (Standing on a Beach Version) about a dozen times in a row. Probably the only time I've ever played "Air Bass Guitar"

Oh, I just don't like them much these days. I went through a phase of being obsessed with them when I was younger, and, while I occasionally enjoy going back and revisiting their old records, I just don't feel motivated to pursue any new music he/they produce. I did hear a few tracks from Bloodflowers and the last album, and I thought they were fine, if old hat, but they just don't excite me.

Afraid not - I've got a looong list of albums I have to buy (don't we all?), and I just can't see moving the cure up to the top. I'm sure I'll pick up Faith one of these days - I don't have that one on CD yet - and I'll have to replace my copy of Head on the Door that a friend 'borrowed' about eight years ago at some point.

now, if you ever meet any of my FRIENDS from college, i bet they'll have plenty of blackmail material on film. i dunno. i just figured the way i looked back then was just such a part of who i was at the time, i didn't have any reason to document it with photos. i never really cared about having photographs back then, which i kinda mildly regret now. i do have one picture from when some of my goth buddies and i went to the cure show in '89...i didn't have the big hair then, but i had the funny clothes, fer shure. lol

as for the band, i was in a local college band for about a year. the band was called "fire hydrant, man" and i sang, wrote lyrics and banged on things with a stick. i was a multi-non-talent!

Thanks for your help. The Kiss is one of my favorite Cure songs ever, so I'm going to listen to Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me first. I bought it and liked it, but it's such a big listen that I think I was overwhelmed by it.

If you like Head On The Door, you'll like Kiss Me too. It's a logical extension of that. If you're overwhelmed by the length, maybe break it up into two halves like Sign "O" The Times.

11. What artist(s) do you see a major Cure influence on?

the faint

15. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters?

19. Is The Cure your overall favorite artist? If not, who is? Are they your favorite band?

the cure aren't even in my top ten anymore, sadly and my favorite band is u2.

20. What is your best memory tied to The Cure?

mid 90's - making out on the bedroom floor with this guy i was dating and his female friend, ebony. i think other people were in the room but it was dark and i was probably high. anyway, the lights were out and kiss me, kiss me, kiss me was playing and the three of us were having a good time.

16. Do you own all of The Cure's albums? If not, which was the last one you picked up? If so, will you be replacing them with the remasters?

17. Will you be buying the next one?
yup!

18. Would you like to see a Robert Smith solo album?
ummm... I can't imagine it would be all that different, so no.
