Madonna in the top 5 The April issue of UK music magazine Q features Madonna as one of the Five Essential Acts in music. Madonna is joined in this list by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, U2 and The Velvet Underground.
The magazine lists Like A Prayer as her definitive album saying: And if you only buy one album....Like A Prayer. Always more interesting when not seeking novelty, Madonna hit artistic and commercial gold with Like A Prayer, her best and least contrived album. The title track, all swirling choruses and kitchen-sink production, remains her major statement, but Express Yourself was ferocious dance, while on the rarely lauded Dear Jessie she had never sounded so human. The magazine also lists what they consider to be Madonna's essential singles: Holiday, Borderline, Material Girl, Like A Virgin, Crazy For You, Into The Groove, Papa Don't Preach, La Isla Bonita, Open Your Heart, Live To Tell, Who's That Girl, Causing A Commotion, Vogue, Justify My Love, Ray Of Light, Frozen, Drowned World/Substitute For Love, Beautiful Stranger, Music, Hollywood. (That's a LOT of essentials)

As much as I love Madonna, I think it's a little farfetched to suggest that her music is more "essential" than Bowie, the Stones, etc. I'm not into older R&B music like Stevie Wonder (I know, I know), but I would imagine that his music might be more essential than Madonna's.
I think that Madonna's presence on the list might be more as a representative of pop music than by the quality of her work alone (if that makes any sense). I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Of course she's too high on this list. But as a pop force I'd say she's essential.
But if I must digress for just a bit, someone agree with me, "Beautiful Stranger" is the most over-rated of Madonna's songs. I just don't get it.

The Beatles? Yes. Velvet Underground? Maybe. Bob Dylan? Of course. U2? Nope. Madonna? Definitely higher than U2, but still not in the top 5 I think.

most of the press wants her to repent for Erotica/Sex and i think until she does they will over look it.
Thank god she still does not regert making those choices, even though hher point of view on them has changed. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

I've heard Madonna come this close to apologizing for those choices during her Cynthia MacFadden interview. she used to say she did it to point out the sexism in society how it was ok for a man to be pornographic but not a woman. now she has stated that she did it out of anger, for being labled a slut and whore from the begining and wanting to show them how slutty she could be. she has never appoligized for making the book, and she shouldn't have to. the media wanted pegged her one way, she acted that way and they cried foul. i think if she were to say she regrets it would be a big let down.
