Timex Social Club and Club Nouveau

What was the deal with those two groups? The only thing I can remember is that The Timex Social Club came out with Rumors and then shortly after that, Club Nouveau came out with Jealousy, which had the same music and similar subject matter as Rumors. Club Nouveau ended up having a more sucessful run than The Timex Social.

actually...the way i remember...tsc was this one guy who got pimped by producer jay king..thinking about you was and still is a jam you can rock (unlike any other tsc/cn songs, except wutmsb)

Club Nouveau formed in Sacramento in 1986, including Jay King, Denzil Foster, Thomas McElroy, Samuelle Pratter, and Valerie Watson. King was the creative force behind the hit "Rumours" by the Timex Social Club in 1986, and formed King Jay Records for Club Nouveau. They made some good disco-flavored and funk tunes, and had four consecutive hits in 1986 and 1987: "Jealousy," "Situation #9," a cover of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me," and "Why You Treat Me So Bad." The last two both reached the number-two spot on the R&B charts. But, in 1988, at the height of their popularity, McElroy, Pratter, and Foster left the group, and were replaced by David Agent and Kevin Irving. Their final recordings for Tommy Boy/Warner Bros. didn't sustain the momentum, and they subsequently disbanded. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

foster and mcelroy went on to produce the best female singing group of the 90's en vogue...samuelle had a decent solo album

I always thought they were one and the same. Thanks for the info. Samuelle had a cut I liked, So You Like What You See.

Awesome song.

One of the best R&B tracks from the mid 80s. I never ever tire of that song.

Sorry, I am a little slow this evening. Was Jay King in the group TSC and then he left and formed CN?

Club Nouveau's first album was the bomb! My favorite songs are the ones that didn't really become that popular..."Promises Promises","Heavy On My Mind" and the killer slow jam "Let Me Go".I bought their next two albums, but their music went downhill after Foster and McElroy left. It's obvious that those two guys (and not Jay King) were largely responsible for the huge success of the debut album.

I met the female lead singer (Valerie Watson) at a nightclub in the early 90s.She mentioned that she was working on a solo album. She actually released a solo CD last year, and Club Nouveau recently signed a new record deal with Thump Records.
