Can someone please tell me what Roger of Zapp, solo stuff is like? Is it still funky or does he mostly do slow jams? Also can you recommend an album to start with? I'm looking for the most electro funk album he has.

To be honest, there's not a whole lot of difference between Roger's sound and Zapp. If you like Zapp, you'll like Roger. Try The Many Facets of Roger, his first solo album. So Ruff, So Tuff is great, and his take on I Heard It Through the Grapevine is classic electrofunk.

Out of his four solo joints, I'd have to say that I enjoyed his first ("Many Facets") more than the rest...But my favorite solo jam of his is remake of "Midnight Hour" on his "The Saga Continues" LP....

"The Many Facets Of Roger" from 1981 is good. It features "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and my all time favorite song by either Roger or Zapp, "So Ruff, So Tuff".

"The Saga Continues" from 1984 was the next album. It's another great album that features the jams, "In The Mix", "The Midnight Hour", and "Girl, Cut It Out".

In 1987, Roger released the album "Unlimited!". This is the only Roger album I didn't buy but I did get the 45s, "Thrill Seekers" and the slow jam, "Be Your Man".

Another great Roger album is "Bridging The Gap" from 1991. It may have been the 1990s but Roger continued on with the funk on this album. Some great tracks are "(Everybody) Get Up", "Break Through", and "Victim Of Love".

You also need to pick up the first Zapp & Roger "All The Greatest Hits" album that was released in the mid 1990s. The last track on there, "Mega Medley", which is a great megamix of Roger & Zapp jams, is reason enough to buy this one.

If you love Zapp, then you'll love Roger. They are basically the same. Actually when I refer the band, I always say "Roger & Zapp" because actually that's what it was.

not much for me to add, I also recommend to get ALL the Roger albums you can lay your hands on. Roger=Zapp, not a difference here

@vainandy: "Unlimited" is quite worth getting too, maybe not par with his first solo albums, nevertheless it's a good spin and has some very nice tracks on it ...including a tight 80s version of "Papa's got a brand new bag"
