Screw Your Wig on...TITE! I bought Slave's first album in the past couple of weeks, and damn if it's not a fine, fine album. Slide is a great song (and the ony single to be released), but Screw Your Wig on Tite gets the most bang out of its funk dollar! Yeah, it borrows heavily from Ohio Players, but don't give a doo doo! Those horns, the harmonized vocals and the call-out hook are all, well, tight. Glad to add this one to my catalogue.

Slave was the shit. Yeah, very cool song, and you're on target about it biting from the Ohio Players. BUT, the stand out song on that album to me "Slide". One of the GREATEST guitar solos ever, post Hendrix. Drac, the guitarist, is seriously underrated. That solo definately influenced me and was the blueprint for Prince's solo on The Time's "Get It Up". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Yes lawd!! Slave is my favorite funk/rock band (after P-funk, of course!) - the thing I liked about them is that they they started funkin' hard right at the time that most of the other funk bands were either goin' disco, or smoothing out their sounds to have more of a pop appeal...Slave stayed in that raw funk niche, and weren't afraid to let Mark "Drac" Hicks and Danny Webster let rip on the guitars when they had to....And Mark Adams is one of my biggest influences on Bass....

Yep, yep. They were true funkateers. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I learned this bit of trivia from the re-issue liner notes. Some of y'all likely know it already, but it's interesting news to me :
Guitarist Mark Hicks had a band called Black Satin Soul with drummer Tim "Tiny" Dozier. He later met trumpeter Steve Washington in music class. Steve had just moved to Ohio from Newark, New Jersey, to live with his uncle, Ralph Middlebrook, better known as "Pee Wee," trumpet player of the Ohio Players. Now the Ohio Players sound makes some sense to me.

There's too much talent on the Org. We need to find a way to get a band together... I grew up listening to Slave and the Ohio Players as well (I grew up in Ohio, so the funk was all around me). I'm a keyboard player tho.

Yeah, a direct connection! they used to say in interviews that the Ohio Players were a big influence...
I'm glad that they released Slave, Stone Jam, and the two greatest hits on CD, but they need to re-release those other albums, especially The Concept, Just A Touch Of Love, and Showtime! ... Damn, those albums bring back memories. My uncle is a bass guitar player and can play any tune by ear. He would make me put on the albums while he played to them. I would have to stack all of the Slave albums back to back sometimes. Slave was the shit! Especially, the stone album. Ok, I am feeling old as hell right now! Age is truly only a number. U can only FEEL as old as u are. "OLD" and "YOUNG" is a state of mind. I know cats that are 19, 20 years old, but act and LOOK twice their age. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I am referring to trying to explain a music experience to someone who was not around, born and has no clue. Bless my nephew, but as of late he is trying to explain the history and theory of funk and hip hop to me! This is just another one of those moments to remind me of it. He forgets sometimes how old I am and that I may have heard this type of music before. I am feeling my age when I see a dedication to funk on an award show or the Hip Hop All Stars. That is all. My body is not cooperating with my mind at this point so I am definitely feeling it! Wanted: Virtual Sugar Daddy to help me buy stuff on Farmville and move up the ranks.
