Parliament and Funkadelic revolutionised R&B music in the 1970's, dominating dance floors with their number one hits such as Flashlight, One Nation Under A Groove, Aquaboogie and (Not Just) Knee Deep. Led by the 'Godfather of Funk,' the unique and somewhat off the wall George Clinton, the two groups were known collectively as P-Funk. With their various off-shoot bands they were responsible for placing nearly 60 singles in the US R&B charts in the 1970's.

Somewhat underground for a large part of their career, the P-Funk mob came to public attention through their outrageous sense of fashion, drug-fuelled music and crazy behaviour, influencing many R&B musicians from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder. Their theatrical live performances, complete with a huge spaceship landing on stage, were one of the hottest attractions on the circuit and their unmistakable sound has been, and will be copied for many years to come. But no one can copy George Clinton, the 64 year old head Funkateer with multi coloured dread locks whose uncompromising anti-establishment attitude is revealed in this documentary.

After James Brown, George Clinton's music is the most sampled in the world and remains a huge influence in hip-hop music today. Have a good look at Outkast if you need any proof! With over 150 musicians involved, this funk mob has seen some of the best musicians come and go: the funk bass player Bootsy Collins, James Brown horn legends Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, the Jimi Hendrix-like Eddie Hazel and Talking Heads' keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell to name a few.

P-Funk fan and 6Music presenter Craig Charles navigates the Mothership for an hour, taking us on a journey through P-Funk. Hear an eclectic mix of music from 1960's psychedelic rock through to early 80's electro-funk. There's also exclusive new interviews with P-Funkers George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Billy 'Bass' Nelson, Garry 'Starchild' Shider, Frankie 'Kash' Waddy, Greg Thomas and Lige Curry. Plus contributions from fellow musicians Nile Rodgers, Lenny Henry, Nelson George, Run DMC, Public Enemy's Flava Flav and Jurassic 5.

Cool, I'll have a listen to that later tonight, thanks. The bbc radio documentary on Prince a couple of years ago was excellent so I'll look forward to hearing this.

Err, no. He was PFunk's keyboardist long before he did a couple of gigs and recordings with the Heads.
