New Doves Single My favourite band in the whole wide world.
Steve Lamacq played their new single on BBC Radio 1 on Monday. You can listen to it by clicking here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radi...lamacqlive and fast-forwarding to about 01:07. It's called Black & White Town and it sort of sounds like 'Heatwave' by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. I love it. I love how the Doves manage to sound happy and miserable all at the same time. The North-West of England is the greatest place on Earth for pop-miserabilism. [Edited 12/15/04 3:05am]

The Doves are great. An honest and unpretentious band determined to infuse raw emotion into music. Songs that give you the shivers. Music thatmakes sense first thing in the morning but you can still sing along to when your head's exploding. I note how you mention it sounds like Martha Reeves and The Vandellas there Justin. I can't say I'm surprised because they sound like a combination of many great artists (Spirituazlized, The Smiths, New Order etc) perhaps ro some explained that they were previously Sub-Sub.
Looking forward to hearing the new single and any new material by Doves in fact if past form is anything to go by.

I meant the new single sounds like the Martha Reeves song - not the Doves in general. The Doves sound like nobody else around at the moment. Why are whingeing student-types like Coldplay so popular when the Doves kick their arse with every album they release? The new single sounds a bit like The Style Council too. It's great. Do you want a copy of the last SubSub album? I can upload, if you wish. I also have quite a few rare Doves tracks too. They love Prince too.

for about a gagillion years now, I've been meaning to pick up some Doves material. But for some reason I never do. I know I'd like them. In fact, I loved their performance at Glastonbury a few years back. I have some brainblock, though, and never pick up their CDs when I'm out shopping. Maybe this will be the time

Just got round to listening to 'Black And White Town' and it just completely hugged my soul. I'm really looking forward to the new album if 'Black And White Town' is anything to go by. Absolutely fantastic, yet again. [Edited 12/15/04 15:56pm]

"Soul" is the operative word, isn't it? There's definitely a Northern Soul influence.
