Freestyle Girl groups.... Battle of the freestyle Girl groups who was your favorite?
Expose Cover Girls Sweet Sensation Seduction Company B. I am quite sure a majority of the orgers alone will go for the popular choice...Expo ahem!!! I myself like stuff from all of them, but my fave would have to be.... I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back. I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there. I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish. And I am

Company B was easily the worst of those you listed. That first album had a few okay singles, but overall it was pretty bad.
I liked and have a few Cover Girls singles, but never bought any of their albums so that eliminates them. I sold my Seduction CD on ebay so they are out too--I never really thought their style was limited to freestyle anyway. C+C Music Factory made them bigger than that. I still have my Exposé and Sweet Sensation records so it's between those two. Exposé's sound was much more polished and their first album may be the best freestyle record ever. But Sweet Sensation had that NYC freestyle sound that I loved so much--more than the Miami thing that Exposé was doing. I'm gonna have to go with the obvious choice and say Exposé. (Although if you had included solo artist, Sa-Fire, she would have been my easy winner.) spelling edit. [Edited 2/4/05 13:30pm]

I'm not a fan of their later work. My favs are Exposed To Love and Point Of No Return. If you get Exposé's Greatest Dance Mixes, you also get the original version of PONR (it runs some 6 minutes) with a different vocalist (not Gioia). That dance compilation and Exposure are what I would up buying. [Edited 2/4/05 17:12pm]

Expose!!!
Jeannette sang the remake of "Point of no return", not Gioia. Gioia sang "Let me be the one". The 1985 original Expose had a girl named Sandee singing lead vocals on PONR and Exposed To Love.

Sweet Sensation The black girl in the group used to live a few houses from me back in the days before she was in the group. "It's not what they call you, it's what you respond to." - Mabel "Madea" Simmons

There are some freestyle songs on it, but you can tell they were trying to expand their sound. Sandee, the vocalist on the original "Point Of No Return" had a few solo hits like "You're The One" and "Notice Me".

I like that album a l ot as well. It was sad that Gioia had to leave the group (according to the Greatest Hits liner notes) due to "irraparable throat damage" . Then was replaced by Kelly Moneymaker. I heard she was attempting to release a solo album, but nothing yet. If in fact her throat was that bad...I don't think we'll be hearing from her anytime soon or again.

Are these groups really freestyle? Expose and Seduction always sounded very pop to me. They didn't really have Latina singers either.

Not a girl group, but still. [Edited 2/5/05 12:58pm] Stevie B is cool with me. His music still sometimes gets play on the stations here in Detroit (it's rarer and rarer as the pop stations try to avoid old school as much as possible now).

I agree that I wouldn't really place Seduction in the freestyle category either, but Exposé's first album was a big freestyle record. Seduction and Company B didn't have Latina singers, but Sweet Sensation and The Cover Girls were definitely Latinas and so was Jeanette Jurado of Exposé.

Having Lating singers doesn't qualify you as freestyle though...you still had Shannon who is considered a founding mother of the genre and Joyce Sims. Seduction was a racially diverse group which did have Idalis who was Puerto Rican....I included them because there songs were still spinned regularly among freestyle sets, they definitely did have a more diverse sound of all of the ladies mentioned...
