What would be the strangest album by Outkast? I personally don't think the love below is that all that weird, are any of the earlier albums more "out there" than that? | |

Obviously you all arent from atlanta so let me explain. Outkast (Goodie Mob too) was alway the Southern version of the conscience rapper. THo they had southern accents they were usually more Tribe Called quest than Lil JOn. Even on there first LP in 94 they had great production but nothing outside of that ATL P.I.M.P style of the time (8ball and MJG had similar beats too). on the second album is when they went from just pimp/conscience raps to more abstract stuff(like talking about space and alien and all that). THey never really tried to sound like Prince music wise, heck Andre 3000 rapped 90% of the time singing every now and then. Even tho Andre's (not so much BIg Boi) prince affinity was apparent (you could tell he liked Around the world in a day quite a bit by some of his cadences)it wasn't until this past LP which is their 5th (not counting their hits collection and the Dungeon Family and SOciety of SOul Lps) that the  influence became so obvios.[Edited 2/1/05 19:38pm] "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine" | |

Aquemini first over ATLiens but I strongly recommend Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik to see the beginings of Outkast and how much they've grown but its is still a classic LP. "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine" | |

Since I love the group so much, I don't find their albums so strange. Stankonia could be the one, but damn if I don't go ffnn crazy when I here B.O.B ( Bombs over Baghdad ). Andre's The Love Below was more experimental than strange, he had the courage to step outside of Rap Pop's form, but it carried the load of their success at the expense of SpeakerBoxx[b]. Aquemini is their most diverse, IMO and "out-there". | |

Source magazine gave "Aquemini" 5 out of 5 mics (Which only a very rare few CD's have achieved) giving it hip hop classic status, yet caused a bit of controversy in doing so. The hip hop community largely sleept on the release at the time but im sure it will be rediscovered for the masterpiece that it is. i've had speakerboxx/the love below since they first came out but i couldn't get into either one of them but i really wanted to and now i know why. the love below has some good moments but it's too jazzy for taste. i actually like speakerboxx more than the love below because although it is more hip hop, it is also pretty funky. most people prefered andre's cd but i think big boi's was better because he brought the funk. so i guess i should check out Aquemini, huh? thanks for the tip. how would you say it compares to speakerboxx in terms of it's funkiness? | |

Hmmm they have always been funky. Like i said before check the first album. Listen to them all in order then Speakerboxx/THe Love Below will make sense. Start with

southernplayalisticadillacmuzik has its funky out there moments like the sleepy brown sung Funky Ride. Very Rick Jamesish. nice guitar solo too. It also touchs on the Alien theme with D.E.E.P. "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine" | |
